Christie Toby Inclusive Education Centre was established in October, 2009. The rationale of an inclusive education centre is one that embraces all children irrespective of their challenges and abilities in the same classroom and learning environment. This is the most recent approach in education delivery in line with the National Policy on Education (2004). It came to reality from the MD/CEO, Dame
Dr. Christie Toby, an educationist par excellence, a visionary leader with great knowledge and experience most especially in the field of education. She is a loving, caring, creative, hardworking mother with the support of The Chairman, ABEC Group of Schools, His Excellency, Sir G. Student Enrolment The School started with enrolment of 6 students – 4 hearing impaired and 2 learning impaired students. Two of the students were enrolled in JS1, One in Primary 3 and the remaining three students in the Nursery Section. At present, the enrolment is 76, 36 Regular Students and 40 students with Special Needs. From this figure, 28 students are in Secondary School. 23 of the students are Regular Students while the remaining 5 students are Students with Special Needs. NECO & WAEC EXAMINATION The School registered her first set of students for Junior NECO and State WAEC Examination. Out of the 6 students registered for the Examination, 2 are Hearing Impaired (Deaf), 1 Visually Impaired (Blind) and 3 Regular (Normal Students). They all had outstanding results in the State WAEC Examination with a minimum of 9 As for each of the student. Full Inclusion The School has regular students and students with special needs in the Nursery, Primary and Secondary School. Staff Enrolment Two Visually Impaired staff resumed with the School in June, 2010 while Four others – 3 Special Educators and One Paraprofessional (Supporting Staff) joined in September with the students. At present, the staff academic strength is 17 (6 Special educators, 6 Regular educators and 5 Paraprofessionals). Boarding Facilities The School offers Boarding facilities to Students with Special Needs (Male and Female) at Nursery, Primary and Secondary levels. The Hostel is temporarily at MaryVirginia Road, Iriebe. The School intends to build the Hostel facilities within her premises soonest. Approval of the School The School finally got her approval from the Ministry of Education as a Private Inclusive Education Centre in April, 2011. Curriculum Content and Time Table The School Curriculum accommodates Students with Special Needs and adequately caters for the Regular Students. The School also developed and Time-Table that is able to meet the required period for all subjects of both needs. The School also offer vocational and Rehabilitation Services to adults who as a result of events or circumstances are impaired, for them to be able to function effectively in their area of endeavours. International Conference The School participated in the 1st Sub-Regional Summit on Inclusive Education: West and Central Africa at University of Education Winneba, Ghana between February 6th and 10th, 2012. The School was duly registered and represented by the Principal of the School. The School Presented a paper titled “Academic Achievement of Regular and Special Needs Students in Inclusive and Non-Inclusive Settings” at the Conference. National Conferences The MD/CEO sponsored two Conferences for the Staff at UNIPORT of National Council of Educational Psychologists (NCEP) between 5th and 8th October, 2011 and national Association of special Education Teachers Conference at Delta State College of Education between 23rd and 28th October, 2011. Excursions In bid to create more awareness and increase the knowledge of the students, the School organized excursion to Media Houses.
