Yesterday, I started lectures as a clinical student of University of Ilorin College of Health Sciences.

This will make it my third transitions as a medical student. Firstly, I was referred to 100 Level when I was referred to as University fresher, then to 200 level as a college fresher and now as a clinical fresher. The journey over the years has been a mix of good and bad, but importantly, I am progressing.

400 Level MBBS is the longest, and as said by many, the toughest class in medical school. But ultimately, I am committed to doing my very best in this new level.

It has been a week since you have resumed but I am sure you have definitely not done some important things that will make you get the results your desire. One of such things is setting SMART goals.

Do the following immediately you see this

1. Get a jotter or a note book that you will constantly read from or better still on all the pages of the books you planned to use for guest semester

2. Write in Bold what CGPA you want to finish 100 level with.

3. State how many hours you will read daily. Don't be too hard on yourself. 2 to 6 hours daily is not bad. Consistency over intensity.

4. Decide you won't be carried away by other things you like (list them e.g sport, woman, video game, sleep, party etc)

5. Get relevant materials from experienced senior colleagues (most especially the immediate ones), get the materials arranged to ease your study.

6. By now, you should have understood your study pattern: you can be the type that works with a time table, you can be one that prefers group reading or library use. Decide with yourself not to be influenced due to peer pressure of people moving 'stuffs' and stick to what works for you.

7. Plan, work and deal with yourself with utmost sincerity.
