Each step is usually rectangular in shape and is designed to bear on a separate level of the soil or rock. The steps are typically staggered, with each step below the previous one, to ensure stability and transfer the weight of the structure to the soil or rock below.

Stepped footings are used to:

1. Accommodate sloping sites
2. Reduce the excavation depth
3. Increase the bearing area
4. Provide additional stability

They are commonly used in areas with uneven terrain, where a traditional spread footing would not be suitable.
