[BREAKING] Strike: I’m in internal turmoil – Education minister
The minister of education, Adamu Adamu, on Tuesday said he had been in a dark period of personal anguish and internal turmoil following the lingering strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities.
This was made known during the meeting with vice-chancellors and pro-chancellors of federal universities at the National Universities Commission in Abuja on Tuesday.
“For me, the past two weeks have been a very dark period of personal anguish and internal turmoil. I used to deceive myself that in a climate of frankness, and with mutual goodwill, it will fall to my lot to bring an end to the incessant strikes in the education sector.
This has not proved possible, or, at least, not as easy, quickly and straightforward, as I used to think.
“Distinguished Chairmen, vice-chancellors, I called you today not to share with you my anguish but to share with you the details of what we have done and what remains to be done. And certainly, a lot remains to be done. But for very different reasons, the current positions of Government and ASUU on the future of negotiations seem to have coincided.
“For me, this is a position I would have wanted us to reach after an amicable resolution of all the issues contained in the 2009 Agreements. It appears that we are running ahead of the negotiations but not for the right reasons. The President of ASUU has been reported to have said the Union would no longer negotiate with the current Federal Government.
“This position must be resisted. Government and ASU have no option than to continue talking until our universities have reopened their doors to students, who clearly are the principal victims of the seemingly unending strikes. In the circumstances, therefore, all Councils and Senates of our universities are enjoined to rise up to their responsibilities.

Why ASUU CASE SHOULD BE DIFFERENT.
1 -The payment of salary is inside the budget for the actual year of the event.
2 - They are not selling nor producing goods, they transact with intellect, hence the government can't say we have lost certain amount of money in revenue while ASUU was on strike.
3 - Yes , unquantifiable time wastage of the students. But ASUU believes they are fighting for the same students. By implication they are in the struggle together. If students aren't complaining ,and they identify with ASUU struggle , they should be paid for the time they were on strike.
4- ASUU can never Letgo the past. They must teach what they abandon. Meaning....instead of working 8hours , they have to work 16 hours to meet up, catch up and make up for the time of struggle.
5- Students(customers) have paid the schools fees for the year and it is inside government purse. They have made the income budgeted as against the expenditure for the running year. Didn't they save it?
5 - My advice: I expect government to be saving their salary without re-allocation of such funds. And if they don't have it , they should sit down with ASUU and arrange how it would be paid instalmentally going forward.
The country is bleeding with this strike . The psychological effect on the students is bad. They are beginning to see their "already unsure" future wasting away again . It can lead to survival desperation and the country will pay heavily for it. Remember ENDSARS was during strike.
ASUU and Government should toe compassionate route and get it resolved for the sake of our future . Nigerian parents are on their kneels.
God bless you, bless federal Republic of Nigeria.
