Rules on Vowel Sounds.

1. Whenever "uy" ends a monosyllabic word it will reveal the diphthong /ai/ as in guy /g*i/, buy /bai/.

2. Anytime "ur" occurs at the end of a bisyllabic word that is a verb or in the middle of any monosyllabic word, "ur" will give the sound /3:/ as in gurgle /g3:gl/, burst, /b3:st/, fur /f3:/.

3. Anytime "eigh" occurs at the BEGINNING or in the MIDDLE of a word especially monosyllabic words, it will reveal the diphthong /ei/. The only exception to this word is "height" /hait/.

4. Anytime you have a structure like this: a+consonant+e as in take, the "a" will reveal the sound /ei/ so take will be /teik/, whale will be /weil/, made will be /meid/.

5. Anytime you have a structure like this: i+consonant+e, the "i" will give the sound /ai/. For example: writhe /raɪð/, time /taim/, fine /fain/.

to transcribe a word

*Rule 1. In transcription, the vowel sounds have 85% chances of changing than consonant sounds.

*Rule 2. All sounds or phonemes are introduced in a word by LETTERS.

*Rule 3. Each letter is an INDICATOR for a sound.

*Rule 4. Consonants are usually retained during transcription.
