BASIC FORMULA but very useful onboard β
βοΈ
The image shows the commonly-used DistanceβSpeedβTime formula triangle. This triangle helps you easily remember how to calculate distance, speed, or time depending on which values you know.
From the triangle:
β’ Distance = Speed Γ Time
(used when you know how fast you are going and for how long)
β’ Time = Distance Γ· Speed
(used to know how long a voyage or travel will take)
β’ Speed = Distance Γ· Time
(used to calculate how fast you are travelling)
β
This relationship is important in navigation and voyage planning, especially at sea where officers must calculate:
β’ estimated time of arrival (ETA)
β’ required speed to reach on time
β’ distance remaining

The global job market for seafarers is vast and there are many avenues for finding employment.
Here are the best strategies and resources for seafarers seeking jobs worldwide:
1. Dedicated Maritime Job Websites and Platforms
These sites are specifically designed to connect seafarers with crewing agencies and shipowners globally. You should create a detailed profile, upload your CV, and update your certificates.
* Crewell
* OceanCrew
* Crewlinker
* Maritime-Union
* SeaJob
* Spinnaker Global (often for shore-based or executive maritime roles, but includes seagoing)
2. Direct Applications to Shipowners and Managers
Large shipping companies often have dedicated careers pages on their websites where they hire crew directly, or through their own crewing subsidiaries. This is a very common and reputable way to find work.
* Container Shipping Companies: Maersk, MSC, CMA CGM.
* Oil and Gas/Energy Companies: Shell Shipping & Maritime, Chevron, ExxonMobil (Cadetships and Officer roles).
* Cruise Lines: (for catering, hospitality, and specialized deck/engine crew).
* Bulk Carrier and Tanker Operators (search for major ship management groups).
3. International Crewing and Manning Agencies
These agencies act as intermediaries between seafarers and shipowners. They are often specialized by ship type (e.g., tanker, offshore, yacht) and region.
* Key points:
* MLC Compliance: Ensure the agency is certified and compliant with the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC, 2006). This is crucial for your protection and legal employment.
* Look for agencies based in major maritime hubs (e.g., Rotterdam, Singapore, Hamburg, London, Cyprus). Examples from search results include OJ Crew and agencies listed on the German flag website.
* Yachting: If you have high-end service skills or a yachting background, agencies like YPI CREW specialize in the superyacht industry.
4. Professional Networking
* LinkedIn: Follow major shipping companies, ship managers, and maritime recruitment
