DEFEND YOUR ANCESTRAL LAND AGAINST RUGA SETTLEMENTS Ooni of Ife, Soyinka urged

The Ooni of Ife and Prof. Wole Soyinka have urged Nigerians to defend their ancestral lands against FG’s Ruga settlement plan.
The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi and professor Wole Soyinka have urged Nigerians to defend themselves as well as their ancestral lands against the plan for Ruga settlement.
Both men made the call in a communique issued on Sunday after a meeting held on Thursday in Ogun State.
The call comes few days after a northern coalition group gave the Federal Government a 30-day ultimatum to implement the Ruga settlement which it suspended following wide rejection.
The communiqué stated:-

“In this regard, the recent ultimatum delivered by a sectarian order to the President of this nation to set up the so-called Ruga cattle settlements across the entire nation within a stipulated time, despite the national outcry, should be acknowledged as an entitlement under the bounty of freedom of expression.
“In return, we exercise ours, and call upon Nigerian nationals across state demarcations to defend the sanctity of their ancestral lands. This birthright has never been annulled, not even under colonial occupation.”

The Ooni and Soyinka also pointed out that Nigeria cannot survive as one if it is plunged into another civil war like the Biafra war.

State of the Union:
Dear friends and fellow alumni,
In alignment with the goal of our Executive committee to operate with transparency, I write to give a periodic update of where we stand as an association.
1. MEMBERSHIP:
Our biggest WIN is our membership strength of 181 as at the time of this update, which represents an increase of 497% since our last reunion. It is our fervent hope to surpass the 200 mark before our next reunion in October. Below is the membership strength by year of graduation:
1991 – 31 or 19.34%
1992 – 11 or 6.08%
1993 – 35 or 19.34%
1994 – 54 or 29.83%
1995 – 17 or 9.39%
1996 – 10 or 5.52%
1997 – 13 or 7.18%
1998 – 2 or 1.10%
1999 – 1 or 0.55%
2001 – 1 or 0.55%
2002 – 1 or 0.55%
2004 – 1 or 0.55%

As always, let us continue to spread the message to all the alumni in our circles of influence. Please be advised that the mobilization effort is not only a task for the EXCO, Set and Chapter coordinators but must be embraced and executed by ALL of us. Together we shall succeed and move the association to greater heights. Here is the account details: Unity Ikere Old Student Association, First Bank Account Number 2025218662. Please include your name and set in the narration.

2. FUNDRAISING FOR MR LEKAN OGUNKUA’s TREATMENT:
As published earlier in July, we initiated a fundraising drive to assist with Mr. Lekan Ogunkua’s medical treatment. It is worthy of note that several alumni from different parts of the world responded and rose up to the challenge. Because of our generosity and outstanding commitment, we have raised a total of ₦1,288,212.90 as of today. We have already given a cheque of ₦500,000 in favor of Mrs. Stella Ogunkua with a balance of ₦788,212.90 in our account awaiting disbursement. The actual cost of treatment is in excess of ₦3,000,000, which means there is still a need of about ₦1,700,000 to pull this off. Please do not hesitate to be a part of this life saving campaign if you have not gotten the opportunity to do so. All contributions should have Ogunkua # in the narration and deposited to our main account listed above. Below is the breakdown of our contribution by year of graduation:
1991 – ₦54,652.90
1992 – ₦142,000.00
1993 – ₦414,560.00
1994 – ₦450,000.00
1995 – ₦125,000.00
1996 – ₦75,000.00
1998 – ₦20,000.00
2001 – ₦5,000.00
UNK – ₦2,000.00

3. 2015 REUNION:
Our second annual reunion and 30th anniversary celebrations will kick off in exactly 2 months from today and all plans are in full gear to make this year’s edition a bigger one. The Local Organizing committee has been working hard to make sure we have a successful event, especially with the 30th anniversary celebrations. For those of us catching this for the first time, the program is scheduled to hold between October 16th and 18th 2015. Please be on the lookout for updates by the Local Organizing Committee through our various chapters and the social media.

4. PROJECT:
The Executive committee sought and got the approval of the Board of Trustees to execute the Library project in commemoration of our 30th anniversary. The Library project was picked primarily because of the academic benefits and also the concept of having the association’s secretariat in the building. The project has been ongoing for a little while with efforts from both the Class of 1993 and the Ondo State chapter of the association. The first phase of the project, which is just to finish out the building is tagged at about ₦2,200,000. The second phase, which is equipping and furnishing is tagged at about ₦3,500,000. We intend to get the first phase completed by the time we gather for the annual reunion/30th anniversary in October. The association currently has about ₦800,000 spendable, which means we would be at a deficit of ₦1,400,000.The Executive Committee does not have the intention of stretching and straining members financially but encourage voluntary donations to make this dream a reality. We are fully aware of the generosity of members worldwide and clearly understand we would not be where we are today without our collective effort. This is what gives us the confidence that we can achieve a lot more as a people as long as we stay united and focused.
On a final note, please do not hesitate to voice out your opinion in any way. We are always seeking ideas on how to move our association forward. You may call, text or email us as indicated below:
