âDoâ Godâs Word.
âGod will bless you for doing it.â James 1:25.
Dr David Jeremiah tells of a well-known seminary professor who spent a summer studying in Jerusalem. In his apartment building lived an orthodox Jewish rabbi with whom he studied Hebrew throughout the summer. One day the professor sat and listened to his Jewish friend recite the entire book of Psalms, in Hebrew, without missing so much as a jot or tittle. Now thatâs pretty impressive, right?
But God doesnât bless you for merely reading His Word, or memorising it, or even being able to repeat it word for word in the original languages. God only promises to bless those who âdoâ what His Word says. Reading your Bible without putting it into practice is like going into a good restaurant and eating the menu while ignoring the meal.
âDonât just listen to Godâs Word⊠do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves. For if you listen to the Word and donât obey, it is like glancing at your face in a mirror. You see yourself, walk away, and forget what you look like. But if you look carefully into the perfect law that sets you free, and if you do what it says and donât forget what you heard, then God will bless you for doing it.â (James 1:22â25 NLT)
One of the dangers of enjoying great preaching is that you can enjoy it and go home intellectually or emotionally moved but spiritually unchanged. The knowledge of Godâs Word is vitally important. But a âhead knowledgeâ of the Scriptures can actually water a root of spiritual pride in your heart whereby you applaud the Scriptures but donât apply them. So the word for today isââdoâ Godâs Word!

Dealing With Fear (1).
âThe Lord is on my side; I will not fear. What can man do to me?â Psalm 118:6.
During the Great Depression unemployment hit 25 percent of the American population. Savings accounts were wiped out by bank failures, farmers lost their land to repossessions, and people were having trouble just feeding their families. During this dark time Franklin Delano Roosevelt addressed the nation in these words: âLet me assert my firm belief that the only thing we have to fear is fear itselfânameless, unreasoning, unjustified terror which paralyses needed efforts to convert retreat into advance.â
What most people didnât realise is that the president himself had experienced some dark hours during which fear paralysed him. Roosevelt was born a child of privilege and educated in Europe, at Harvard, and at Columbia Law School. But at age thirty-nine, he was stricken with a case of polio that left him severely disabled. During his recovery he developed an extreme fear of fire. He worried he wouldnât be able to escape because of his disability. But in time he overcame his fear, regained the use of his hands, and even learned to walk again with the aid of braces. He re-entered the political arenaâfearlessly campaigning to become the governor of New York, which he did in 1929. He then went on to become one of Americaâs greatest presidents and guided the nation to victory in World War II. In his memoirs Roosevelt recalls how when he turned to God for help, courage, and guidance, he received them.
Are you afraid today? If you are, stand on this promise: âThe Lord is on my side; I will not fear. What can man do to me?â

Shun Unhealthy Self-Focus (5)
Fri, 27 Nov 2020
âIs this the kind of fast I have chosen?â Isaiah 58:5
God never commanded you to examine your emotions, experiences, or sins. What He did say is, âBehold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!â (John 1:29 NASB) Victory over sin comes from focusing on Christânot beating yourself up! In the Old Testament the Israelites reached a place of despair.
Theyâd fasted and âafflictedâ their souls, yet God ignored their efforts. They sought spiritual restoration in their own self-directed way, and God rejected it, saying: âIs this the kind of fast I have chosen⊠for people to humble themselves⊠bowing oneâs head like a reed⊠in sackcloth and ashes? Is that⊠acceptable to the Lord?â Clearly, God is not pleased with the misery that comes from self-focus! He has a more effective way to liberate us.
Rather than have us weighed down with remorse, He said: âIs not this the kind of fasting I have chosen: to loose the chains of injustice⊠set the oppressed free⊠break every yoke⊠share your food with the hungry⊠provide the poor wanderer with shelterâwhen you see the naked, to clothe them, and not⊠turn away from your own flesh and blood?â (Isaiah 58:6â7 NIV)
Godâs way eliminates the âparalysis of self-analysisâ by commanding you to forget about yourself completely; to stop dwelling on your imperfections and get involved in the lives and needs of others. His four-point plan for overcoming your flesh is:
(1) Acknowledge His grace and see yourself as ârighteousâ in Christ.
(2) Fix your eyes on Jesus.
(3) Shun obsessive self-focus.
(4) Serve God by serving others.
When you do all these things, âYour light will rise in the darknessâŠThe Lord will guide⊠and⊠strengthen you.â (Isaiah 58:10â11 NIV)

âThe Higher Thingsâ!
Thu, 29 Oct 2020
âSet your minds and keep them set on what is above.â Colossians 3:2 AMPC
The Bible says, âSet your minds and keep them set on what is above (the higher things), not on the things that are on the earth.â There are many things that happen in this world which can easily affect our mind and emotions, and we need to learn how to rise above them. When negative thoughts are building up and trying to take control of our emotions, we need to take a few minutes to âset our minds and keep them setâ on âthe higher thingsâ.
It often helps to speak positively about whatever is bothering you. For example, have a chat with yourself that goes something like this: âMy family may not be everything Iâd like it to be, but Iâm thankful I have a family. My house may not be as nice as Iâd like it to be, but itâs still a good place to live. I might be going through a difficult time right now, but Jesus is with me and Heâs going to get me through it.â The devil knows which of your buttons to push to get an emotional reaction. So what should you do?
Stand on Godâs Word: âBlessed (happy, fortunate, to be envied) is the man whom You discipline⊠instruct⊠and teach out of Your law, that You may give him power to keep himself calm in the days of adversity.â (Psalm 94:12â13 AMPC) The more you discipline yourself to say no to your feelings and yes to the wisdom of God, the easier it becomes to defeat the enemy in a spiritual tug-of-war. So decide today that you wonât arrange your life around unreliable emotions, and focus instead on âthe higher thingsâ!
