Many Direct Entry candidates complete their JAMB registration believing they have fulfilled every requirement for admission.
Unfortunately, that is not always the case.
One of the most important but least understood stages of Direct Entry admission processing is the verification of your A'Level qualification through the National Integrated Post-Secondary Education Data System (NIPED).
Every admission season, many qualified candidates lose admission simply because their previous institution failed to verify their academic qualification before the admission process ended.
If you are applying through Direct Entry, this guide explains everything you need to know.
What Is NIPED Certificate Verification?
After you complete your Direct Entry registration with JAMB, your academic qualification is not automatically accepted.
Instead, JAMB sends an electronic verification request to the institution where you obtained your qualifying certificate.
Your institution is expected to confirm that your certificate is genuine and belongs to you through the NIPED platform.
Only after this verification can your qualification be considered valid during admission processing.
Without successful verification, your admission may not be recommended, even if you satisfy every other admission requirement.
Who Must Complete This Verification?
This verification applies to all Direct Entry candidates, regardless of the qualification used for admission.
This includes candidates using:
- National Diploma (ND)
- Higher National Diploma (HND)
- Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE)
- Bachelor's Degree (B.Sc.)
- JUPEB Certificate
- IJMB Certificate
- Any other recognized A'Level qualification accepted by JAMB
No Direct Entry applicant is exempt from this process.
Do You Need to Submit Anything?
The good news is that you are not required to upload or manually send the verification request.
Once your Direct Entry registration is completed, JAMB automatically forwards the verification request to your previous institution.
However, your institution must respond before the admission exercise concludes.
What Should You Do?
Although the request is sent automatically, you should not wait silently.
To avoid unnecessary delays:
- Visit your previous institution as soon as possible.
- Alternatively, contact the Admissions Office, Academic Affairs Unit, or the officer responsible for Direct Entry verification.
- Inform them that JAMB has sent your NIPED certificate verification request.
- Politely request them to complete the verification promptly.
Taking this simple step can prevent admission delays or rejection caused by pending verification.
How to Check Whether Your Certificate Has Been Verified
You can easily monitor your verification status through your JAMB profile.
Follow these steps:
1. Log in to your JAMB portal.
2. Open your Direct Entry dashboard.
3. Locate the NIPED icon or section.
4. Click on it.
If your certificate has been verified, you will see a green confirmation message.
If your certificate is still awaiting verification, you will see a red notification, indicating that your institution has not yet completed the verification.
Is NIPED Verification the Same as Transcript Submission?
No.
Many candidates confuse these two processes.
They are completely different.
NIPED Verification confirms the authenticity of your qualification through your previous institution and is processed through JAMB.
Transcript Submission involves sending your academic records to your chosen institution when required by that institution.
Completing one does not replace the other.
Why This Process Is Important
Admission processing involves several interconnected activities.
A delay at one stage can affect every other stage.
Even if you:
- Meet the cut-off mark,
- Have an excellent O'Level result,
- Selected the correct institution,
- Meet departmental requirements,
your admission can still be delayed or denied if your A'Level qualification remains unverified.
That is why every Direct Entry candidate should monitor this process carefully.
Our Advice to Direct Entry Candidates
Do not assume everything is progressing simply because you have completed your JAMB registration.
Check your NIPED verification status regularly.
If your certificate has not been verified, contact your previous institution immediately.
Being proactive today could save your admission tomorrow.
