TITLE: HARD DAYS ARE NOT FOREVER
The rain leaked through the tiny holes in the roof of the one-room house where Amara and her son, Tobi, lived. At night, she placed bowls on the floor to catch the drops. Some nights they slept hungry, but Amara always told Tobi the same thing before bed.
“Hard days are not forever.”
Every morning before sunrise, Amara walked miles to sell fruits by the roadside. Her feet ached, and sometimes people passed by without buying anything. Still, she smiled. Because every coin she earned meant one more day her son could stay in school.
One afternoon, Tobi came home quietly, holding his torn schoolbag.
“Mom… the teacher said I might have to stop school if we don’t pay the fees.”
Amara felt her chest tighten, but she knelt down and held his face gently.
“You will not stop learning. I promise.”
That night, while Tobi slept, Amara cried silently. But the next morning she woke up stronger. She worked longer hours, carried heavier baskets, and saved every possible coin.
Years passed.
Tobi studied under streetlights, in noisy rooms, and sometimes on an empty stomach. But he never forgot his mother walking those long roads for him.
One day, a letter arrived.
Tobi had earned a full university scholarship.
When he told Amara, she covered her mouth and burst into tears—the same tears she once cried in the dark, but this time they were filled with joy.
Many years later, Tobi stood on a stage as a successful engineer. Cameras flashed, people applauded, but he looked straight at the small woman sitting in the front row.
“My success,” he said with a trembling voice, “started with a mother who refused to give up.”
Amara smiled through her tears.
Because the hard days had finally ended. ❤️
