From the Editor in Chief
It is with gratitude to God,joy in my heart and my pleasure in presenting this edition of GLOBAL TEACHER. This is because the magazine is becoming better and it is going places. The awareness of the existence of the magazine is becoming global. The patronage is from far and near. The magazine now has ISSN, more contributors and advertisers.. Then all glory, honor, and adoration must be given to God.Teachers are expected to be consumers and producers of knowledge. They teach others what they know. They impart knowledge to others under their tutelage and care. That is why no stone should be left unturned in updating their own knowledge too. And that is the gap that Global Teacher is filling.
The focus of this edition is on mentoring. Mentoring is a deliberate, purposeful, specific training and personal teaching given to another person in order to make him become a well adjusted, and successful person. The importance of mentoring in the lives of people and most especially pupils and students cannot be over-emphasized. If we mentor our pupils and students properly, they will be morally upright. If we mentor effectively, academic performance of the students will be enhanced. If we mentor properly, the country will produce citizens that will be willing to give their best to the country. If we mentor properly, the country will be a better place to live in.
The youths are the future leaders of tomorrow. Our students in secondary schools are being prepared for tertiary education, world of work and for leadership position. They therefore need to be deliberately mentored so as to be disciplined, responsible, effective and efficient. Students all over the world are yearning for mentors. They want to learn at the feet of those that have attained success in their field of endeavour. They want to know how leaders reached the height they attained. They are yearning for people to discuss their challenges with. They long for people to discuss their efforts and struggles with. They need people to encourage, motivate, and even challenge them. We need to mentor them in order not to loose them to the insurgents. We need to mentor them so that we don’t loose them to drugs. If we don’t want our students to become cultists, wayward, unfocussed, drunkards, and be performing poorly academically, then mentoring should be given serious attention
In this edition, there are incisive, enlightening, informative, and educative write-ups. Where should mentoring start? Who should mentor? Can mentoring enhance academic excellence? What is the relationship between mentoring and career? These are some of the questions that will be answered in this edition. Our contributors have done justice to most of these questions. Dr. Felicia Oduntan, one of our regular contributors , contributed the piece on mentoring. Nursery and primary school kids, It is not early to start mentoring kids right from nursery schools, in fact the earlier, the better, while Dr. Afusat Busari wrote on the role of parents in mentoring kids. Dr. Fakeye and D. O Fadele wrote on teachers' role in mentoring students. Dr. Ope Oyekan examined the relationship between management of educational institutions and mentoring.. All these write-ups will enrich readers’ knowledge and equip them with the requisite strategies to mentor students effectively .if students are being mentored properly, they will choose their career by choice and not by chance. In order not to leave anything to chance on the career of the students, there are two write ups on career in this edition. Prof Emmanuel Akinade, a great counselling psychologist and a mentor contributed a piece on career choice, while Dr. Olorungbemi examined how counsellors can use mentoring to foster career development..
There are also other illuminating and thought-provoking write-ups in this edition. Dr Oshin wrote on effective teaching of Mathematics, Mrs Badaru examined teaching of summary, while Dr. Ojo wrote on causes and forms of examination malpractices . People who will mentor successfully must enjoy conducive home environment. Thus, readers will benefit immensely from a paper from Dr. Animashaun on how to overcome marital challenges. This edition is not neglecting the health of the people, because health is wealth. There is therefore a piece on how to manage hypertension which has been branded as a killer disease. Dr. Oba contributed that piece
Also, in this edition, the profile of a mentor, a teacher of teachers and a great Nigerian is published. He is Simeon Ade Ajayi, a dynamic, vibrant lecturer and a professor of History in the Department of History, University of Ibadan. His life is a source of inspiration and worthy of emulation. There is also an interview with one of the leading publishers in Nigeria and a teacher. He is Dr. Dele Odanye,The interview is a delight and full of motivation. There are other write-ups like how teachers can maximize the potentials of teachers’ cooperative societies , teacher-student relationship and how to start small scale business.
As usual, this a delicious academic menu. Your appetite has already been whetted, I can only encourage you to sit down, relax and enjoy the delicacy. I must acknowledge the contributions of all our contributors. I really appreciate their love, support .and interest on GLOBAL Teacher. They are wonderful people. Global Teacher
GLOBAL TEACHER is a publication of Image-j Communications that is meant to enhance academic excellence in schools.
From The Editor in Chief
This is the second edition of The Teacher, now known as GLOBAL TEACHER. We thank God for the grace to venture into the publication of this magazine and for sustaining it. The first edition came out in March, 2014, we printed one thousand copies and distributed them free of charge to teachers and stake holders in the society. Copies were also sent to the President and Commander in Chief of Armed Forces of Nigeria, Hon Minister of Education, and the Governor of Oyo state etc. We thank them for their best wishes. We are also grateful to Prof Adenike Emeke, the Director of Institute of Education, University of Ibadan, for her letter to the editor in chief and the special adviser to the Oyo state governor on education for her encouragement. In this edition, you will read one of the letters sent to the editor in chief. We have tried to incorporate some suggestions in this edition. The name of this informative, educative and impactful magazine has been changed to GLOBAL TEACHER . The new nomenclature is the one approved by the National Library of Nigeria after an intensive search. Apart from the title, name or nomenclature, nothing has changed about the magazine. The idea, the vision, the objective and the goals for floating the magazine remain the same.
The focus of this edition is on the role of motivation toward academic excellence in schools. Academic excellence is the ultimate goal of educational institutions in modern society. That is why the government, parents and other stake holders devote their time and resources to the enhancement of education in the society. Academic excellence is needed for technological development. In short, academic excellence will enhance the development of the country. Also, academic excellence is one of the antidotes to nepotism, tribalism, insurgency, killing, robbery, assassination and corruption in the society.
Despite the importance and desirability of academic excellence, the academic situation in the country is far from the ideal. For example, the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB)’s result that was released in March, 2014 revealed that only 47 students scored 250 marks out of more than a million. Also, the result of the Computer Based Test (CBT) result that was released in May revealed that only three candidates scored above 250 marks out of more than a million that sat for the examination. Also, the result of the West African Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination of May/June 2014 showed that only 31.28% of the candidates obtained credits in five subjects and above including English Language and Mathematics. This is the academic situation in our secondary schools. If we want to boost academic achievement, enhance academic performance and reduce the incidence of poor academic performance, then the issue of motivation must be taken seriously.
The above spurred the editors to focus on motivation in this edition. This is because we all need motivation in the discharge of our duties as expected of us. As usual, this edition is an academically loaded, enriching and highly informative and educative. It is a compendium of scholarly write-ups on motivation. There is a paper on motivation for teachers in nursery and primary schools. There are also scholarly papers on government role in motivation, principals’ role in motivation, counsellors’ role and relationship between management and motivation.
This edition also treats other important topics like the role of teachers in nation building, the role of vice principals in public secondary schools, security tips for school personnel, retirement, expectation and challenges, tips on marital stability, teaching difficult concepts in chemistry and how to write a lesson note etc. also, this edition contains the profile of the editor in chief and the managing editor.
The cover price of this edition is two hundred Naira. Surely, the reader would obtain value for his or her money. You are encouraged to buy one for yourself, buy one for your colleague and teachers of your children. Endeavour to read this magazine and you will never remain the same professionally. I must express our profound appreciate to all the scholars that have contributed articles and papers to this edition. Honestly, without their contribution this magazine would not have seen the light of the day.
