When results are not encouraging, some people quickly say, “Science is too hard, just move to commercial or art class.”
Ah! If difficulty alone determines success, then explain why science students are most of the time leading the class in overall assessments?
Now, let us talk seriously.
As SS1 first term comes to an end, I already know what usually follows. By the time we resume in 2026, many students will begin to flee from the science class to the art or commercial class. This yearly movement has almost become a tradition, but let me say this clearly and professionally: running away is not the solution.
A student not doing well in science does not automatically mean the student is unintelligent, lazy, or better suited for another class. Most times, it means the foundation needs strengthening, study habits need adjustment, fear and mindset need correction, and guidance and patience are required.
Science demands discipline, consistency, problem solving skills, and resilience. These same qualities are the reason science students often excel across subjects and even beyond science subjects.
Switching to art or commercial classes should be based on interest, ability, and long term career goals, not as an escape route from temporary academic challenges. When decisions are made out of fear, frustration, or pressure, the problem is simply transferred, not solved.
Parents, guardians, and students, let us counsel wisely. Not every struggle is a sign to quit. Sometimes, it is a sign to sit down, relearn, and grow.
As Ayoade also known as Uncle-Math Wise, I speak not from assumptions but from experience. I have been in the education profession since 5th January, 2015, after obtaining my second degree in Education.
Remember this always:
A goat in Nigeria can never become a lion in America after obtaining visa.
No matter how long a lizard stays in water, it can never become a crocodile.
Seek counsel today and change the story of your child forever.

Countdown to Resumption: Day 1
Growth Mindset – Why Failure is Part of Learning
Tomorrow is resumption. Some boarding students are already in school or heading for school. Remember, “Every setback is a setup for a comeback.” True growth is never a straight road. Each challenge, each stumble and each seeming failure is simply a hidden opportunity to grow stronger and wiser. “The child who falls and rises is not learning to walk in vain.”
Failure is not the end of learning; it is an essential part of mastery. “When the root is deep, there is no reason to fear the wind.” The deeper the lesson learned from mistakes, the more unshakable the foundation for future success.
Parents and students, as we begin a new academic session, let us embrace every obstacle as a chance to develop resilience and character. A setback today can become the very reason for tomorrow’s breakthrough.
Math-Wise Brilliant English wishes all our esteemed parents and dear students a happy and fulfilling resumption. May this session be a season of courage, growth and outstanding achievement.
We are rooting for your success. Yes, ALL OF YOU!!!

Countdown to Resumption: Day 2
Preparing Early for WAEC, NECO and JAMB
Success in major examinations does not happen by chance. It is the product of diligent preparation, wise strategies and consistent effort.
1. Begin Early with a Clear Plan
Start your preparation long before the examination date. “The best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago. The second best time is now.” Set specific daily and weekly goals for each subject. Early preparation gives you enough time to master difficult topics and build confidence.
2. Use Past Questions as a Compass
At Math-Wise Brilliant English, this is our strongest weapon we use to combat low grades. We strongly believe that past questions are invaluable. They reveal the patterns and styles of examiners and help you focus on important areas. “He who does not know where the rain began to beat him cannot know where he dried his body.” Studying past questions shows you exactly where to direct your effort and how to avoid past mistakes. A weapon used wrongly is detrimental. Join our team today and thank us later.
3. Create a Balanced Study Routine
Divide your day into segments for reading, solving problems and revising. “Little by little, the bird builds its nest.” Regular and balanced study sessions prevent last-minute pressure and help retain knowledge.
4. Seek Mentorship and Peer Support
Studying with like-minded peers and mentors encourages discipline and accountability. “In the multitude of counsellors there is safety.” Share knowledge, ask questions and learn from others to deepen understanding.
5. Combine Hard Work with Smart Strategies
Work hard, but also study smart. Identify high-value topics and concentrate on them. “When the wind blows, the grass bends.” Adapt your strategy to the demands of each exam for maximum results.

Countdown to Resumption: Day 3
How to Balance Academics with Extracurricular Activities
Back in my teaching days in Ibadan, I taught an SS 3 student who shone both in the classroom and on the basketball court. While preparing for the Milo Basketball Competition, he was also sitting for his WASSCE and UTME (JAMB) examinations. Surprisingly, he performed far better in his exams than in basketball that year. Yet, before he fully settled into his 100-level studies, he and his team clinched a medal the following season. His story proves that with discipline and planning, students can excel in both academics and extracurricular pursuits.
I was able to outline the following lessons from his story:
1. Set clear priorities: Fix study schedules around key practice or club times.
2. Plan ahead: Use a weekly planner to avoid last-minute clashes.
3. Stay consistent: Small, daily efforts in academics and sports build lasting strength.
4. Seek support: Communicate with teachers and coaches when schedules overlap.
5. Rest well: Sound sleep and short breaks renew focus and energy.
To you, it may not be sports. It could be fashion designing, entertainment, music, modeling, coding, baking or even learning to break records like . Remember, true success blossoms when the mind and body grow together. — “Mens sana in corpore sano” (meaning: a sound mind in a sound body). Time, like the tide, waits for no one; every day offers a fresh chance to shape your own story. By wisely balancing academics with sports, clubs and other passions, you build discipline, resilience and the strength to face the future with confidence. Begin today to cultivate habits that nurture both intellect and character, and watch how your efforts open doors to lasting achievement and fulfilment.
Math-Wise Brilliant English will commence online Physics and Chemistry classes next week, while Math Clinic and Fitness Online begins 1st October. As Nigeria marks her Independence, you too can begin your own journey of independence in Mathematics.

Happy Resumption.

Countdown to Resumption: Day 4
Overcoming Peer Pressure in Secondary School
“He who follows the crowd will usually get lost in it.”Peer pressure can either sharpen your character or lead you into mistakes that may cost your future. Every teenager must learn the wisdom of making independent and purposeful choices.
These practical steps will help you to overcome peer pressure:
1. Know Your Values
Decide what you stand for before you are faced with tough choices. “If you stand for nothing, you will fall for anything.”
2. Choose Friends Wisely
Surround yourself with friends who encourage your dreams and respect your decisions. “Show me your friend and I will tell you who you are.” If you have five foolish friends, you must be the sixth. If you have five wise friends, you must be the sixth. Choose your company wisely.
3. Learn to Say No
Do not be afraid to walk away from wrong influences. Saying no today may save your tomorrow. Saying no today will prevent them from coming back again.
4. Build Confidence Through Knowledge
A disciplined student is not easily swayed. Invest in your studies, build your skills, and let your confidence speak louder than pressure.
5. Seek Guidance
Parents, teachers, and mentors are there to help. The Yorubas will say, “What an elder sees while sitting down, a child cannot see even if he climbs a tree.” “In the multitude of counsel, there is safety.”
Peer pressure is real, but wisdom is stronger. Make choices that reflect your goals, not the noise of the crowd. At Math-Wise Brilliant English, we guide students to think critically and stand tall in their academic and personal journeys.

Countdown to Resumption: Day 5
The Role of Nutrition in Academic Performance
A healthy body sustains a sharp mind. As students prepare to resume school, the meals they eat play a vital role in improving concentration, stamina and mental alertness. Proper nutrition is not only fuel for the body but also nourishment for the brain.
Here are simple meal ideas that help students maintain energy and focus throughout the school day:
1. Whole grains and oats – Provide steady energy release to avoid mid-day tiredness.
2. Eggs – Rich in protein and choline, which support memory and brain function.
3. Beans and legumes – Affordable and packed with protein and iron for lasting energy. Yes Beans!!
4. Fresh fruits like oranges and bananas – Supply natural sugars and vitamins to sharpen attention.
5. Vegetables such as spinach and carrots – Strengthen the body and protect against fatigue.
6. Nuts and groundnuts – Boost brain health with healthy fats and minerals.
7. Fish such as sardines or mackerel – Supply omega-3 fatty acids that improve memory.
8. Milk or yoghurt – Build strong bones and sustain mental energy.
9. Plenty of clean water – Hydration prevents tiredness and improves clarity of thought.
10. Moderation in sugary snacks – Too much sugar causes quick energy crashes that reduce concentration. We suggest that Nigerian made sugary snacks be minimized or excluded from your menu. Many of them are not fit for human consumption.
“The child who is not embraced by the village will burn it down to feel its warmth.” In the same way, children who are not supported with proper meals may struggle in their studies.
“An army marches on its stomach.” Students, too, succeed on the strength of their nutrition.
At Math-Wise Brilliant English, we believe that good learning begins with a nourished mind. When students combine sound study habits with healthy meals, they become unstoppable in their academic pursuit.
I hope you have prepared for resumption? Please plan meal time-table alongside.

Countdown to Resumption: Day 6
Developing Discipline & Time Management as a Teenager
Time is the most valuable resource of every student. Mastering discipline and effective time management is the gateway to both academic success and personal growth. “Tempus fugit” — time flies. Below are five practical hacks to help students use their time wisely.
1. Set Clear Priorities
Focus on what matters most each day. Distinguish between urgent and important tasks. “Carpe diem” — seize the day.
2. Create a Realistic Study Schedule
Plan your hours carefully and assign time blocks for reading, revision, and relaxation. Consistency strengthens discipline.
3. Avoid Procrastination
Do not postpone what can be achieved today. Small, steady efforts yield great results. “Non progredi est regredi” — not to go forward is to go backward.
4. Use Breaks Wisely
Short rests refresh the brain and enhance focus. A balance between work and rest sustains long-term productivity.
5. Review Your Day
Before bedtime, reflect on what you achieved and prepare for the next day. Reflection builds discipline and sharpens planning.
At Math-Wise Brilliant English, we believe that disciplined time management is a skill every science student must master to excel.
