He Never Went to School… But He Built a University With Over 11,000 Students.
At 84 years old, Abdulraheem Oladimeji remains one of the most surprising figures in Nigeria’s education story.
Despite having no formal education, he became the founder of Al-Hikmah University in Ilorin, where thousands of students are now earning university degrees.
His life began with hardship. After losing his parents at an early age, he struggled through life doing menial jobs in Lagos. Unlike many people who later built institutions of learning, he never had the opportunity to attend school himself.
The turning point came in 1994.
During pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia, his son reportedly had a dream that his father should establish a university. At that time, Oladimeji had already invested money in setting up a plastic factory.
Instead of continuing with the business, he made a bold and unexpected decision. He abandoned the factory plan, sold properties he owned abroad, and invested his personal savings into building an institution dedicated to education.
While working on the project, he also began improving himself. He organized evening classes where he learned how to read and write, studying alongside students despite being the founder of the institution.
Years later, the vision became reality.
Today, Al-Hikmah University in Ilorin educates over 11,000 students, employs professors, doctors, and academics, and continues to produce graduates in various fields.
When asked about his motivation, Oladimeji explained simply that his goal was not profit but service to humanity.
His journey from an uneducated village boy in Igbaja to the founder of a university stands as a reminder that a person’s background does not always determine their future impact.
