*Beware of Envy*
“Saul was very angry; this refrain displeased him greatly. ‘They have credited David with tens of thousands,’ he thought, ‘but me with only thousands. What more can he get but the kingdom?’ And from that time on Saul kept a jealous eye on David.” — 1 Samuel 18:8-9
Envy is a dangerous emotion because it can begin quietly in the heart but eventually produce destructive actions. It makes a person uncomfortable with another person’s success, recognition, progress, or favour. Instead of celebrating what God is doing in someone else’s life, an envious person begins to compare, compete, resent, and eventually look for ways to silence or bring that person down. This was the tragedy of King Saul. David had returned from battle victorious, and the women of Israel celebrated him, saying, “Saul has slain his thousands, and David his tens of thousands.” Instead of rejoicing that Israel had gained a courageous warrior and that God had given them victory, Saul became angry. His attention shifted from the victory God had given Israel to the recognition David was receiving. He began to think, “What more can he get but the kingdom?” From that moment, Saul watched David with suspicion and jealousy.
See how envy distorted Saul’s perspective. David had not taken Saul’s throne, challenged his authority, or plotted against him. Yet Saul interpreted David’s success as a threat. Envy has a way of making another person’s achievement look like our own loss. It causes us to measure our worth by another person’s success and makes us uncomfortable when someone else is being celebrated. We must therefore run away from anything that feeds jealousy in our hearts. When someone succeeds, receives an opportunity, is promoted, is honoured, or experiences a breakthrough, we should learn to thank God for that person rather than asking, “Why not me?” Their success does not diminish what God can do in our own lives. There is enough grace in God’s hands for everyone.
We must also be careful not to allow envy to lead us into destructive behaviour like gossiping about someone, discrediting their achievements, withholding support, wishing for their failure, creating obstacles for them, or looking for ways to silence them. Saul’s jealousy eventually progressed into attempts to kill David. What began as an attitude in the heart became a destructive pursuit. Beloved, do not allow another person’s rising to become the reason for your falling. Celebrate others sincerely; pray for those who are succeeding, and learn from them where appropriate, and trust God for your own appointed season. When tempted to compare yourself with another person, remember that God’s plan for your life is not measured by someone else’s journey. Another person’s success is not evidence of your failure. Celebrate what God is doing in others, and trust Him for what He is doing in you.
*Prayer:* Lord, search my heart and remove every seed of envy, jealousy, unhealthy comparison, and resentment. Give me the grace to celebrate the success of others without feeling threatened in Jesus’ name.
You are blessed in the name of Jesus Christ.
