Congratulations on completing the 2026 UTME! Now that your JAMB results are out (or being released in batches), many candidates are asking the big question: โWhatโs next?โ
The truth is, your JAMB score is only the first step. What truly determines your admission chances is how your score compares to the cut-off marks set by your chosen institutions. At this stage, confusion and wrong assumptions often lead to lost opportunities. Letโs sanitize the process with clear facts.
UNDERSTANDING JAMB CUT-OFF MARKS:
JAMB, in collaboration with tertiary institutions, sets a minimum admissible (general) cut-off mark for eligibility. For the 2026/2027 admission cycle (which applies to current processes), this baseline stands at:
โข Universities: 150
โข Polytechnics, Colleges of Education, and Monotechnics: 100
โข Colleges of Nursing Sciences : 140
This is only the national minimum set by JAMB. It does not guarantee admission. Individual institutions and departments set higher institutional and departmental cut-off marks based on competition, available slots, and performance of applicants.
Cut-off marks vary significantly from one school to another and even across courses within the same school. Highly competitive institutions and professional courses (e.g., Medicine, Law, Engineering, Pharmacy) usually require much higher scores.
Example: University of Ibadan (UI)
The University of Ibadan is one of Nigeriaโs most competitive federal universities. Historically and for recent cycles, UI maintains a minimum JAMB score of 200 for candidates to be eligible to sit for its Post-UTME screening.
โ If your JAMB score is below 200, you are not eligible for UIโs Post-UTME.
โ In this case, consider a Change of Institution to a school whose cut-off aligns better with your score.
Always verify the specific requirements of your chosen school rather than relying on general assumptions.
NEXT STEPS AFTER CHECKING YOUR JAMB RESULT =
1. ASSESS YOUR SCORE REALISTICALLY:
Compare your score against the minimum for your preferred institution and course. Be honest about your chances.
2. WAIT FOR OFFICIAL INSTITUTIONAL CUT-OFFs and POST-UTME ANNOUNCEMENT:
Institutions will soon release their specific cut-off marks and screening guidelines. Monitor official school portals, JAMB CAPS, and trusted education platforms.
3. CONSIDER CHANGE OF INSTITUTION/COURSE (if necessary):
If your score falls short of your first-choice school, a timely change of institution can open better opportunities. Do this through the official JAMB portal.
4. UPLOAD YOUR OโLEVEL RESULTS:
Ensure your WAEC/NECO results are uploaded on the JAMB portal. Many schools require this before screening.
5. PREPARE FOR POST-UTME/SCREENING:
Most universities conduct Post-UTME or aggregate-based screening. Start preparing early - review past questions and stay updated on registration dates.
6. MONITOR JAMB CAPS REGULARLY:
Admission offers are processed via the Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS). Accept or reject offers promptly when they appear.
As of April 2026, the general minimum cut-off marks for the ongoing admission cycle have already been set (150 for universities). Individual institutions are expected to announce their departmental cut-offs in the coming weeks/months following the policy meeting processes.
NB: Admission is a process, not a one-time event. Your JAMB score opens the door, but strategic actions (change of institution where needed, strong Post-UTME performance, and timely uploads) will determine if you walk through it.
Stay focused and take proactive steps. Many candidates with moderate scores still gain admission into good schools by making smart choices early with TESA admission process and consultation service.
Youโve done the hard part by writing JAMB. Now, sanitize your admission strategy with accurate information and deliberate actions.
