September 24, 2026 — Groups 3 and 4 of the 300-level students of the Industrial & Production Engineering Department, University of Ibadan, continued their practical engagement in the production phase of simple male clothing under the vocational training programme, Fashion Design and Garment Production Process: A Systems Approach to Project Planning and Control.

Facilitated by Miss Esther Babatunde, Creative Director of Koret Fashion Home, the session built on the students' previous training in body measurements and the drafting of front and back bodice patterns for male garments. To complete the pattern development process for the simple top, students were taught how to draft sleeves using the measurements they had earlier obtained. Following the demonstration, they were tasked with independently producing sleeve pattern drafts, reinforcing their understanding of pattern drafting as a critical planning stage in garment production.

The session then progressed into fabric preparation and cutting. Miss Babatunde demonstrated the correct placement of pattern drafts on fabric, emphasizing important considerations such as grain lines, fabric pattern direction, and seam allowances. She explained how these factors influence garment fit, appearance, and overall quality. Students subsequently applied these principles by positioning their pattern pieces and cutting their fabrics according to their drafted patterns

The session reinforced key principles of Project Planning and Control by demonstrating how successful garment production depends on careful preparation, adherence to specifications, and systematic ex*****on.

September 24, 2026 — It was the turn of Groups 3 and 4 of the 500-level students in the Industrial & Production Engineering Department at the University of Ibadan to undertake the Advanced Maintenance and Overhaul of the Sewing Machine module under the vocational training programme, Basic Sewing Machine Maintenance: Relevance of Value Engineering & Analysis.

The session, facilitated by Mr. Donald Adedeji, Creative Director at Whoopy Yun Fashion House, reintroduced the students to the major mechanical components and motion systems of the sewing machine. Beyond identifying these parts, the students were taught how to inspect them for wear, misalignment, lubrication deficiencies, excessive clearances, and timing-related faults that could affect machine performance and product quality.

Building on this foundation, Mr. Adedeji guided the students through the standard overhaul workflow, covering critical stages such as isolation, cleaning, disassembly, inspection, repair or replacement, reassembly, adjustment and calibration, and testing. The students also learned techniques for condition assessment, including the key areas to inspect, indicators of machine deterioration, and the engineering interpretations required to diagnose faults and determine appropriate maintenance actions.

To reinforce the lessons, the students were divided into four teams and assigned practical tasks involving the reassembly of key sewing machine components. Upon completion, each team tested its machine by sewing straight stitches on fabric to verify proper assembly, alignment, and functionality. This hands-on exercise emphasized the importance of precision, teamwork, and systematic maintenance practices in restoring equipment to optimal operating condition.

The session demonstrated that effective equipment overhaul involves more than replacing faulty parts; it requires a thorough understanding of machine systems, component interactions, and diagnostic techniques. By successfully reassembling and testing the machines, the students gained practical experience in troubleshooting, equipment restoration, and performance verification, further reinforcing the principles of Value Engineering and Analysis, where improved functionality, reduced downtime, extended equipment life, and enhanced product quality are key objectives.

Research and technology commercialization play an essential role in the evolution of Nigeria's burgeoning fashion industry. By converting research and innovations into viable market solutions, the industry is opening doors to growth, innovation, and impactful transformations. This is exemplified in the partnership between the University of Ibadan and Zucchini Fashion Center, which focuses on delivering locally-driven solutions to the unique challenges faced by the fashion sector.

This partnership emphasizes strategic collaboration with lecturers and students to tackle pressing issues within the Nigerian fashion ecosystem, particularly among tailors, seamstresses, and designers. The goal is to harness research efforts to develop tailored solutions that address specific challenges and refine business practices. As part of this initiative, recent graduates from the University of Ibadan's Industrial and Production Engineering Department conducted research projects focused on system optimization, ergonomics, and safety in the fashion industry. Their work will soon be showcased across our various platforms, highlighting their contribution to industry advancement.

Research serves as the cornerstone of technology commercialization. It involves in-depth exploration of problems, the creation of new knowledge, and the invention of innovative solutions. Academic institutions, research organizations, and private enterprises play a pivotal role in driving progress across diverse fields, including healthcare, agriculture, renewable energy, artificial intelligence, and fashion.

Recognizing the complexities involved in transforming research into market-ready products, this collaboration aims to bridge the gaps between academia, industry stakeholders, and end consumers. By providing expertise, resources, and coordination, the partnership ensures that innovations are effectively commercialized to support the continued growth and evolution of Nigeria’s fashion industry.

September 23, 2026 — Advanced Maintenance and Overhaul of Equipment is a critical aspect of engineering that focuses on focuses on restoring, optimizing, and extending the lifespan of machinery through detailed inspections, diagnostics, repairs, component replacement, calibration, and equipment overhauls. Unlike routine maintenance, it seeks to prevent major failures, reduce downtime, improve reliability, and ensure consistent performance throughout the operational life of equipment.

As part of the vocational training programme Basic Sewing Machine Maintenance: Relevance of Value Engineering & Analysis, Groups 1 and 2 of the 500-level students of the Industrial & Production Engineering Department, University of Ibadan, explored the concepts and practical applications of advanced maintenance and equipment overhaul in sewing machines. The session was facilitated by Mr. Donald Adedeji, Creative Director at Whoopy Yun Fashion House, who guided the students through the principles and practices required to restore and sustain optimal machine performance.

To reinforce previous lessons, Mr. Adedeji revisited the key components of the sewing machine, including the needle, feed dog, bobbin and bobbin case, needle clamp, stitch regulator, and other critical parts. Beyond reviewing their functions, he explained the specific maintenance concerns associated with each component, such as wear, misalignment, damage, and the impact of neglect on machine performance. The students were also introduced to different levels of maintenance, including routine, preventive, corrective, condition-based, and overhaul maintenance, and the circumstances under which each approach is most appropriate.

The practical component of the session required students to work in teams on assigned straight sewing machines. They were tasked with reassembling disassembled machine parts and restoring the machines to working condition. Upon completion, each team tested its machine by producing straight stitches on fabric to verify that the components had been correctly assembled and aligned. This exercise emphasized the importance of precision, attention to detail, and teamwork in maintenance activities.

The session demonstrated that effective equipment overhaul goes beyond replacing faulty parts; it requires a thorough understanding of machine systems, component interactions, and maintenance requirements. By successfully reassembling and testing the machines, students gained practical experience in troubleshooting, equipment restoration, and performance verification, reinforcing the principles of Value Engineering and Analysis — how proper maintenance and overhaul practices contribute to improved functionality, reduced downtime, extended equipment life, and enhanced product quality.
