This page features the work of the Team working on a TETFUND -anchored project on the DEVELOPMENT, STANDARDIZATION AND DEPLOYMENT OF VIRTUAL ASSESSMENT STANDARD IN HIGHER EDUCATION INSTITUTIONS (HEIs) IN NIGERIA. This Project which won TETFUND’s approval with Prof. E Adenike Emeke as the Principal Investigator (PI) and eight other versatile researchers, is the product of brainstorming that started during the Covid 19 Lockdown. We monitored the teaching-learning endeavours that went on during the lockdown, both in Nigeria and in other climes. We noticed that virtual teaching and learning went on fairly seamlessly in many educational settings. But, when we pried into the extent to which virtual assessment was being carried out, we found out that there was a big gap and that Virtual Assessment in the teaching-learning process requires an Assessment Standard to guide the lecturer before, during, and after online teaching. This fired our imagination which culminated into our submitting a Proposal to TETFUND, and which was eventually approved for implementation.
The main objective of this three-Phase Project is to develop a standardized Virtual Assessment Standard as instrument for assessing students’ virtual learning. Therefore, the envisaged project’s outputs include a Nigerian-grown assessment standard tool, crafted in a user-friendly Framework, and capable of providing adequate guidance in evaluating the practice of online assessment in higher education institutions in Nigeria, and in countries with similar attributes. This makes the product both locally relevant and internationally applicable.
The three-Phase study has adopted Survey, Standards, and Software Development designs.
Phase I is the authentication of the 10 identified indicators of Virtual Assessment Standard.
Phase II is the validation of the authenticated indicators of Virtual Assessment Standard.
Phase III: features the deployment of the standardized software for use of virtual assessment. This software application will be piloted in the institutions used for the study after which the software will be recommended for wholesale use.
