You view the new year as a fresh start to do things you have not done in the last year or to work towards achieving a goal. All things can be mostly be achieved if you have a set goal and plan towards it.
Start with your long-term goals and ambitions: Where do you ultimately want to be in your career? How about education wise, which professional qualification do you want to add to your accomplishment?

Write your goals down: This will help get it clear in your mind of what you want to achieve. You can refer back to them as and when you need to keep you on track.
Consider your motivations behind your goals: State the main reason why you want to achieve that goal. Put your reasons alongside your long term goals. This will help keep you focused and remind you why it's worthwhile.

Write down the steps you need to do in order to reach your long-term goals: Under each long-term goal write a list of actions you need to do to achieve them. Such as enroll yourself in a Project Management course and book for an exam to certify yourself a guru at the Dragnet Prometric Test Center?

Set SMART goals: This means your goals should be Specific. Measurable. Achievable. Realistic. Time based. For example instead of saying, be a Project Manager at the end of the year; it's more effective to use the SMART goal like enroll for the Project Management Institute (PMI) Plus further steps will include booking and writing your exam at Dragnet Prometric Test Center.

Accountability: Share what you plan to do with someone you trust to keep you accountable. This person can be as a trusted colleague at work or a friend or family member. The process can be that they call or email you regularly to check if you’ve done is what you said you would do.
Celebrate your achievements - big or small: To keep yourself motivated, recognize when you complete your smaller steps and reward yourself appropriately.

Adapting your goals: Remember things are not fixed. Review your plans - do you need to slightly change your goals, add more steps?
