*NEW SCHOOL YEAR: HELP YOUR CHILDREN SET GOALS*

Schools are resuming soonest, and parents are preparing for it. The preparation should not be limited to getting school supplies alone, but should also include helping our children set goals to be achieved in this new school year.

The goals will be different depending on the age, strength and aspirations of each child.

*Importance of Goal Setting for our Children*
The benefits of setting goals should be discussed with them. Some of these are:
** It brings independence.
** It motivates them to complete tasks.
** It's a way parents bond with their children.
** It builds confidence in them.
** It boasts their resilience.
** It helps them have a good future ambition.
** It aids critical thinking and problem solving skills.
** It facilitates time management and organisation.

*Examples of Goals that can be set*
@ Improved handwriting
@ Participating more in class activities.
@ Better grades than the previous ones.
@ More concentration in class.
@ Having an up-to-date work.
@ Not missing homework.
@ Write better essay.
@ Better performance in weak subjects.
@ _Tieing_ shoes independently.
@ Resilience to achieve more.
@ Getting ready for school early enough.
@ Use schedule everyday.
@ Learn from previous mistakes.
@ Relate with teachers, classmates and friends better.

*Tips For Setting And Achieving Goals*
The amount of support for setting goals depends on the child's age, but this should be balanced. Too much help from the parents might result in doing it for them. Also, little help might result in the child struggling, getting frustrated and being overwhelmed.

To achieve this,
1. *Set Positive Expectations*
This is what you expect from them this new school year.

2 *Let them set the Goals*
Ask the following questions to help them arrive at their goals:
# Is there anything you want to work on at school this year?
# What's your favourite/ least interested subject(s)?
# What are the better attitudes you want to put o
