What happens when we give children the opportunity to imagine the future of their country and the confidence to speak about it?

They speak with clarity.
They speak with hope.
They speak with courage.

During our Independence celebration, our children had diverse lessons and this discussion forum was a fall out from one of the lessons they had. From this special discussion forum, they shared the Nigeria they want to see.

A Nigeria with better education.
A Nigeria with peace and security.
A Nigeria with good healthcare.
A Nigeria where people respect one another.
A Nigeria filled with opportunity, fairness, progress, and unity.

They were not simply speaking to their parents in the audience. They were speaking to all of us — families, communities, leaders, decision-makers, and the world.

This is because when children tell us the future they hope for, perhaps our greatest responsibility is to listen.

These are not only the children of today. They are the citizens, thinkers, builders, innovators, and leaders of tomorrow.

And the Nigeria they want to see begins with the Nigeria we choose to build with them today. 🇳🇬✨

🇳🇬 66 YEARS OF NIGERIA — ONE NATION, MANY CULTURES, ONE PEOPLE! 💚🤍

What a beautiful celebration of Nigeria at Oaks & Acorns Montessori!

Our parents, children, teachers, staff, and the entire OAMS community came out in their numbers to celebrate together — and what a joyful celebration it was! 🇳🇬✨

It was a beautiful opportunity to appreciate the richness of our different cultures, learn from one another, celebrate our diversity, and remind our children that although we may speak different languages, wear different attire, and come from different parts of our country, we are one people.

The colours, the food, the music, the laughter, the cultural expressions, and most importantly, the coming together of our community made the day truly special. 💚🤍

At Oaks & Acorns, we believe that helping children appreciate diversity begins by giving them opportunities to see it, experience it and celebrate it.

Many cultures. One people. One Nigeria. 🇳🇬

🌍✨ Our beginning-of-term Show & Tell is always such a special way to reconnect after the holidays.

This term, our children and the guides returned with little treasures, stories and memories from different parts of the world, and the excitement in and outside the classrooms was beautiful to see.

Show & Tell gives children more than an opportunity to share an object. It opens conversations about places, people, history, cultures, traditions and experiences beyond their immediate environment. It helps them listen to one another, ask questions, build confidence and develop a genuine curiosity about the wider world.

Perhaps one of the loveliest parts is knowing that even while our families are away, the school community is still somewhere in their thoughts — a little something is chosen, brought back and shared with friends.

From one journey to another, our classrooms became a small window into the world. 🌍💛

Three weeks in… and the learning is already speaking for itself. 🌱✨

Across our Montessori environments, there is so much happening—quiet concentration, purposeful movement, lessons being presented, hands deeply engaged in meaningful work, children collaborating, practising, discovering, questioning, repeating, and growing in confidence.

This is what learning looks like when children are active participants in their own development.

It may look like a child carefully repeating one activity.
Another working alongside a friend.
A guide quietly presenting a new lesson.
A group exchanging ideas.
A child completely absorbed in work that has captured their interest.

But beneath every moment, something important is developing—concentration, independence, coordination, perseverance, responsibility, curiosity, confidence, and a genuine love of learning.

In Montessori, the classroom is not simply a place where lessons are taught.

It is a living environment where children are continually becoming. 🌿

And we love watching the work unfold.

What if a child could understand thousands before being asked to memorise rules about them? ✨

That is the beauty of the Montessori Bank Game.

With the Golden Bead Material, children do not simply hear that 1,000 is a big number — they see it, touch it, carry it, count it and build it.

The journey begins with the decimal system:
✨ units
✨ tens
✨ hundreds
✨ thousands

Then something beautiful happens.

Children begin to build large numbers, identify their numerals, match symbols to quantities and gradually move into operations such as addition with big numbers.

And because the Bank Game is often a collective exercise, there is even more learning happening than mathematics.

Children are communicating.
Taking turns.
Reasoning together.
Checking one another’s work.
Making decisions.
And discovering mathematical relationships for themselves.

This is why Montessori mathematics is so powerful.

Before mathematics becomes abstract symbols on paper, the child has had the opportunity to experience the mathematics concretely.

Not rote learning.
Not simply memorising that 1,000 has three zeros.

But understanding what one thousand actually means.

From the hand ➡️ to the mind ➡️ to abstraction.

That is Montessori mathematics. ❤️

Why does Montessori work? 🌱

Because children are not simply taught what to think — they are given opportunities to think, explore, reason, choose and discover for themselves.

In a Montessori environment, children learn to:

✨ Take initiative instead of always waiting for instructions
✨ Think through problems and find solutions
✨ Make choices and experience the natural consequences of those choices
✨ Work independently and confidently
✨ Concentrate deeply and complete meaningful work
✨ Collaborate, communicate and respect others
✨ Learn at a pace that honours their individual development
✨ Ask questions, investigate and discover
✨ Take responsibility for themselves, their work and their environment

And perhaps one of the most beautiful things about Montessori is this:

The child is not prepared simply to pass a test. The child is prepared for life.

We are not raising children who constantly ask, “What should I do next?”
We are nurturing children who can observe, think, decide and say, “I know what I can do.”

That is why Montessori works. ❤️

Because when we trust children with meaningful independence, they gradually learn to trust themselves.

Today, we joined the global community in celebrating International Literacy Day with our Acorns—reading, learning, journaling new words, writing, sharing stories, practising handwriting, and discovering how words help us understand and express our world.

At OAMS, literacy is more than a classroom skill; it is a lifelong tool for thinking, communicating, imagining, and growing.

One page, one story, one carefully written word at a time, we are nurturing a lifelong love for literacy. 📚✍️

Our first day was filled with happy reunions, new beginnings, busy little hands, curious minds, and the beautiful rhythm of learning returning to our prepared environments.
