What Are Punctuation Marks?
Punctuation marks are symbols we use in writing to make our sentences clear and meaningful.

They tell us when to stop, pause, ask a question, or show feelings. Without punctuation, writing becomes confusing.

TYPES OF PUNCTUATION MARKS
✅️Full Stop ( . )
Meaning:
A full stop is used at the end of a statement or command.

Uses:
Ends a sentence
Shows that an idea is complete

Examples:
I enjoy English lessons.
Open your book.

✅️ Comma ( , )
Meaning:
A comma shows a short pause in a sentence.

Uses:
Separates items in a list
Separates clauses in a sentence
Used after introductory words

Examples:
I bought rice, beans, and oil.
After school, we went home.

✅️ Question Mark ( ? )
Meaning:
A question mark is used at the end of a direct question.

Uses:
Shows that a sentence is asking something

Examples:
What is your name?
Where do you live?

⚠️ Do not use a question mark for statements.

✅️ Exclamation Mark ( ! )
Meaning:
An exclamation mark shows strong feelings.

Uses:
Shows excitement
Shows surprise
Shows warning or command

Examples:
Well done!
Watch out!
That’s amazing!

✅️Quotation Marks ( “ ” )
Meaning:
Quotation marks are used to show someone’s exact words.

Uses:
Used in direct speech
Shows what someone said

Examples:
The teacher said, “Keep quiet.”
She shouted, “Help!”

✅ ️Apostrophe ( ’ )
Meaning:
An apostrophe shows possession or short forms.

Uses:
To show ownership
The girl’s bag
The boys’ shoes
To form contractions
Don’t (do not)
It’s (it is)

✅️ Colon ( : )
Meaning:
A colon introduces a list or explanation.

Uses:
Before a list
Before an explanation

Examples:
I need three items: books, pens, and pencils.
Remember this: honesty is important.

✅️ Semicolon ( ; )
Meaning:
A semicolon joins two closely related sentences.
Uses:
Connects related ideas

Examples:
I like English; it is my favourite subject.
She studied hard; she passed the test.
Why Punctuation Is Important
It makes writing clear
It helps readers understand meaning
It improves good English
It prevents mistakes

Punctuation marks help us write correctly and communicate better. Always use the right punctuation mark in everyday sentence
