M.A.U YOLA HOSTS ADSU DELEGATION, BOTH DELIBERATE ON DEEPER ACADEMIC COLLABORATION

Modibbo Adama University Yola, today hosted a high-powered delegation from Adamawa State University (ADSU), Mubi, as the two institutions moved to translate their two-month-old Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) into concrete collaboration.

The high-powered delegation, was led by the Vice-Chancellor of Adamawa State University, Mubi, Prof. Augustine Clement.

Welcoming the visitors, the Vice Chancellor of Modibbo Adama University, Yola Prof. Ibrahim Umar, described the visit as a timely follow-up to the MoU signed between both institutions two months ago, which he said provides a framework for joint research, staff development, sabbatical programmes, facility sharing and joint postgraduate supervision.

Prof. Umar used the occasion to showcase the strides made by his administration, including the clearing of outstanding staff promotion arrears, the provision of 24-hour solar-powered electricity across campus, the introduction of interest-free loans and burial support packages for staff.

He also highlighted the university's academic expansion, with new programmes in Law, Nursing, Sociology, Political Science, Cybersecurity and Software Engineering, alongside newly approved courses in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence.

He further disclosed that the institution has strengthened its international footprint through partnerships with universities in Cameroon, Garoua, Ngaoundéré and Maroua pushing its international postgraduate student population beyond 200. He also added that the University recently secured a ₦350 million TETFund Mega Research Grant to study Coalbed Methane resources in Benue State.

Responding, the Vice Chancellor of Adamawa State University Mubi (ADSU), Prof. Augustine Clement, commended the Vice Chancellor, for the warm reception accorded to them and also applauded the remarkable developments recorded under his leadership.

He expressed satisfaction with the quality and level of facilities inspected during the tour, describing the visit as a rewarding experience and reaffirming the commitment of both universities to strengthening their partnership under the existing Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

He disclosed that ADSU is set to establish a College of Medical Sciences, stressing that such an ambitious project cannot be achieved in isolation and would require strong collaboration with sister institutions like MAU. Yola.

The meeting provided both universities the opportunity to review their respective strengths and weaknesses, with both sides agreeing on practical areas of synergy going forward.

Deliberations ended on a positive note, with both Vice Chancellors expressing optimism that the partnership would move beyond paper to deliver tangible outcomes for staff, students and both institutions at large.

The engagement was capped with a facility tour, during which the ADSU delegation and MAU Management visited Central Laboratory, Home Economics Department, College of Medical Sciences, Solar Farm, University Farm Centre, Entrepreneurship Centre, CEMIT, and the Academic Publishing Centre.

Both institutions expressed confidence that the collaboration would open new frontiers in research, academic exchange and institutional development for the benefit of the Adamawa State and beyond.

CELEBRATING TWO YEARS OF PURPOSEFUL LEADERSHIP.

Congratulations to our Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ibrahim Umar, on his two years of purposeful and impactful leadership at Modibbo Adama University, Yola.

A SNAPSHOT OF KEY ACHIEVEMENTS:

1. Clearing of outstanding promotion arrears and staff entitlements, ensuring that inherited promotion-related obligations were addressed.

2. Supported and facilitated the continued implementation of the University’s solar power initiative, contributing to the realisation of 24-hour power supply on campus.

3. Introduction of interest-free loans for staff, as part of commitment to improving staff welfare. One million naira for senior staff and five hundred thousand naira for junior staff.

4. Introduction of burial support for staff who lose their lives in active service, providing institutional support to affected families, 2.5 million naira for senior staff, 1 million naira for junior staff.

5. Expanded staff training and development, including increased opportunities for participation in TETFund-sponsored training and professional development programmes particularly for non-academic staff who were not benefitting before. Sponsored over 300 staff for local and international conferences.

6. Revival of the MAU Table Water Factory for revenue generation.

7. Expansion of academic programmes, including the introduction and take-off of new programmes in areas such as Law, Nursing, Sociology, Political Science, Cybersecurity, Software Engineering, alongside several newly approved academic programmes such as Data Science and Artificial Intelligence.

8. Strengthening of postgraduate education, with the University continuing to expand its postgraduate programmes and attract students beyond Nigeria.

9. Internationalization of the University, particularly through partnerships with universities in Cameroon, including the University of Garoua, University of Ngaoundéré and University of Maroua. This has significantly increased the international presence of MAU, with over 200 international students currently enrolled in postgraduate programmes and partnership with sister institutions such as American University of Nigeria and Adamawa State University, Mubi.

10. Expansion of research collaboration and opportunities, including partnerships that support joint research, publications, innovation and knowledge exchange.

11. Successful attraction of major research funding, including the recently approved ₦350 million TETFund Mega Research Grant for research into Coalbed Methane resources in Benue State.

12. Improvement of infrastructure and facilities, including the upgrading of teaching, research and other university facilities, as well as the provision of modern equipment.

13. Improved student support and welfare interventions, with greater attention to the academic and general welfare needs of our students.

14. Strengthening of digital and academic systems, in line with the vision of positioning Modibbo Adama University as a competitive institution nationally, regionally and internationally.

15. Upgrading junior staff members who acquired additional qualifications on self-sponsorship, to senior level.

16. Establishment of MAU Business School.

VC Inaugurates MAU Business School Board Charges members on Excellence

The Vice-Chancellor of Modibbo Adama University, Yola, Professor Ibrahim Umar, has inaugurated the Board of the newly established Modibbo Adama University Business School.

The inauguration marks another significant step in the University's drive to strengthen professional training, entrepreneurship and revenue generation through the newly established Business School.

Speaking during the inauguration, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ibrahim Umar, congratulated the newly inaugurated members of the Board and urged them to remain committed to the development and promotion of the School.

Professor Umar challenged the Board to build the Business School into a reputable institution capable of attracting professionals from within and outside Nigeria, noting that its success would depend largely on the commitment, expertise and vision of its leadership.

He encouraged the Board members to work towards making the School comparable to leading business schools in the country, particularly institutions such as the Lagos Business School, while assuring them of his administration's full support in providing the necessary assistance for the School to succeed.

The Vice-Chancellor noted that the Business School was established with a dual mandate of providing high-quality professional training and contributing meaningfully to the University's internally generated revenue.

Responding on behalf of the Board, the Chairman of the Board, who is also the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, (Academic), Professor Iliyasu Audu, expressed appreciation to the Vice-Chancellor for finding the members worthy of the responsibility.

Professor Audu assured the Vice-Chancellor that the Board would leave no stone unturned in ensuring the growth and success of the Business School.

He emphasized that the School has the calibre of professionals and academics required to drive its programmes and attract participants from across Nigeria and beyond.

He further pledged the Board's commitment to developing programmes that would meet contemporary industry needs while positioning the Business School as a centre for professional development, executive education and management training.

The inauguration was attended by members of the Business School Board and other senior officials of the University, including the pioneer Director of the MAU Business School, Professor Bashir Ahmad Daneji, whose leadership is expected to play a pivotal role in laying a strong foundation for the School.

The establishment of the Business School is part of the University's broader efforts to expand its academic offerings, strengthen town-and-gown relationships, provide relevant professional training and explore sustainable avenues for revenue generation.

MAU YOLA HOLDS 32ND INAUGURAL LECTURE ON “PLANT POPULATION DENSITY, CROP YIELD AND BRIDGING THE YIELD GAP”

Modibbo Adama University, Yola, has today hosted its 32nd Inaugural Lecture titled "Plant Population Density, Crop Yield and Bridging the Yield Gap: An Agronomist in the Service of Mankind." The lecture was delivered by Professor Baba Bukar Jakusko, Professor of Agronomy (Crop Production), at the University's College of Medical Sciences Lecture Theatre 1.

The Vice Chancellor, Professor Ibrahim Umar, represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration), Prof. Aliyu Bawuro Mustapha, who chaired the occasion, read the Inaugural Lecturer's profile, describing him as a great researcher whose passion for solving Nigeria's food security challenges has earned him respect far beyond the walls of the university.

He commended Professor Jakusko's decades of dedication to advancing agricultural science, noting that his work continues to touch the lives of farmers across the country, before formally declaring the lecture open.

Professor Jakusko opened by tracing the word "agronomy" to its Greek roots, agros (field) and nomos (manage) describing it as the branch of agricultural science that studies the relationship between soil, crop, and environment in field crop production.

He walked the audience through the fundamentals of crop yield, explaining that yield ultimately depends on a plant's final population, a figure shaped by the number of viable seeds, germination percentage, and survival rate. Getting plant population right, he stressed, is central to maximising output.

He further highlighted the role of land preparation and tillage in building a strong crop stand, describing tillage as the process of working the soil to create favourable planting conditions, suppress weeds, conserve moisture, and allow organic matter to break down ahead of sowing.

Turning to a persistent farm challenge, Professor Jakusko identified poor germination and weak crop stands as problems farmers face worldwide, pointing to small or underdeveloped seeds, seed-borne diseases, and germination inhibitors in the seed coat as common culprits.

On the national picture, he linked his research directly to Nigeria's food security outlook, warning that land degradation combined with a population now above 201 million is pushing agriculture toward intensification, making it more urgent than ever to close the gap between current farm output and true production potential.

Professor Jakusko offered ten recommendations to government, farmers, and researchers. These included placing food production at the top of national priorities, investing in modern land preparation techniques and planters that ensure uniform seed placement, and the consistent use of high-quality seeds alongside appropriate fungicides, pesticides, and biological treatments.

He also called for plant population densities to be adjusted to match each site's yield potential and water availability, urged stronger management of climate change's effects on crop production, and appealed for agricultural research and extension services to be better resourced and extended to reach growers, especially women, across the country.

The event drew a strong turnout of Principal Officers, staff, students and well-wishers from within and beyond the state.

On behalf of the university, DVC Administration Prof. Aliyu Mustapha presented a plaque to Professor Jakusko in recognition of his outstanding contribution to research and the impact of his work.

The Chairman of the Lecture Awards and Prize Committee (LAPC), Prof. Abraham Okolo, thanked all who attended, describing the turnout as a reflection of the high regard in which the Inaugural Lecturer is held across the university community. He urged attendees to carry the lessons of the lecture back to their homes, offices, and communities.

Professor Baba Bukar Jakusko was born on 12th May 1965 in Jakusko, Yobe State. He studied at Ramat Polytechnic, Maiduguri, before proceeding on a Federal Government of Nigeria/BEA overseas scholarship to the Kuban Agricultural Institute in Krasnodar, USSR/Russia, and later the Russian State University of Agriculture in Moscow, where he earned his Ph.D. in Agriculture in 2006.

He began his career in 1985 with the Borno State Agricultural Development Programme as a Block Extension Supervisor. He joined the University as Lecturer II on 12th March 1997, and rose to the rank of Professor in the year 2013. He is happily married with two wives and blessed with nine children, five boys and four girls.

Faculty of Agriculture SIWES Committee Combines Practical Training with Environmental Conservation

The Faculty of Agriculture Students' Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) Coordinating Committee of Modibbo Adama University (MAU), Yola, has organized a tree planting campaign to promote practical learning, environmental conservation, and climate change mitigation among students.

The exercise brought together members of the university management, academic staff, and 400-level students of the Faculty of Agriculture, who planted various economic and environmental tree species, including mango, guava, cashew, and blackcurrant, in designated areas of the campus.

The campaign forms part of a compulsory two-unit SIWES course undertaken by the students and constitutes an important component of their continuous assessment.

As part of the programme, the students are expected to nurture and maintain the trees throughout their period of study, while the project will continue to serve as a lasting community service to the university after their graduation.

The exercise was graced by some members of the university management, commending the efforts of the organisers.

Speaking on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Aliyu Bawuro Mustapha commended the Faculty of Agriculture and the SIWES Coordinating Committee for conceiving the initiative, describing it as a practical step towards instilling environmental consciousness in students.

He noted that the exercise would help groom future agricultural professionals to appreciate the importance of environmental conservation while equipping them with practical skills essential for sustainable agricultural development.

He reaffirmed the university management's support for initiatives that combine academic training with community service and environmental sustainability.

Speaking during the exercise, the Coordinator of the Faculty of Agriculture SIWES Coordinating Committee and Professor in the Department of Soil Science, Professor Hassan Musa, described the initiative as the first of its kind under the committee.

He explained that the campaign is designed to be a continuous exercise aimed at instilling environmental responsibility and practical agricultural skills in students, with the Department of Soil Science coordinating its sustainability.

Professor Musa expressed appreciation to the university management for honouring the invitation and participating in the exercise. He also appealed to the management to put adequate measures in place to protect the newly planted trees from destruction by grazing animals and herders to ensure their survival and long-term benefits.

Students who participated in the exercise expressed excitement over the initiative, describing it as a rewarding practical experience that complements classroom learning. They noted that the campaign would contribute significantly to environmental sustainability, climate change mitigation, and the promotion of sustainable agricultural practices.

The initiative reflects the Faculty of Agriculture SIWES Coordinating Committee's commitment to integrating classroom instruction with practical field experience while encouraging students to make meaningful and lasting contributions to environmental conservation and the development of the university community.

OPAY PARTNERS WITH MODIBBO ADAMA UNIVERSITY TO EXPAND SCHOLARSHIP, INNOVATION AND CAREER OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENTS

OPay Digital Services Limited has partnered with Modibbo Adama University (MAU), Yola, to provide scholarships, promote innovation, and enhance career development opportunities for its students through the OPay Scholarship Programme.

The partnership forms part of OPay's ₦1.2 billion, 10-year scholarship initiative, launched in 2024 to support access to quality higher education across Nigeria.

Having commenced with the University of Ibadan, the programme has since expanded to several institutions, with partnerships now spanning 24 tertiary institutions across the country's six geopolitical zones.

The proposal was presented to the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) during a courtesy visit by the National Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Comrade Obidah David, who delivered the partnership letter on behalf of OPay Digital Services Limited.

The initiative reflects OPay's commitment to advancing academic excellence, inclusivity, innovation, and graduate employability by supporting talented students and equipping them with opportunities that extend beyond the classroom.

Receiving the delegation on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor in his office, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Professor Aliyu Bawuro Mustapha, commended OPay Digital Services Limited for introducing an initiative that will broaden access to quality education and provide meaningful support to students.

He observed that the scholarship programme would significantly improve the educational experience and well-being of financially disadvantaged students by reducing the burden of educational expenses and enabling them to concentrate on their academic pursuits.

Professor Mustapha expressed the University's appreciation to OPay for selecting Modibbo Adama University, Yola, as one of its partner institutions. He described the collaboration as timely and impactful, noting that it aligns with the University's commitment to academic excellence, student welfare, and strategic partnerships that create opportunities for students to realise their full potential.

Under the partnership, 20 indigent undergraduate students of Modibbo Adama University will each receive a one-time scholarship award of ₦300,000 per academic session. Beneficiaries will be selected based on academic merit and demonstrated financial need through a transparent process jointly agreed upon by OPay and the University.

Beyond the scholarship awards, the programme includes the National Innovation Challenge, a nationwide competition that invites undergraduate students to develop innovative solutions to real-world problems. Participants will compete for prizes from an ₦18 million prize pool, encouraging creativity, entrepreneurship, and technological advancement.

The initiative also features OPay Futures, an employability programme designed to connect outstanding participants in the Innovation Challenge with internship and employment opportunities within OPay and its affiliate organisations.

Through this component, students will gain practical industry experience and improve their career prospects after graduation.

The partnership is expected to ease the financial burden on deserving students, improve access to higher education, encourage research and innovation, and strengthen graduate employability.

It also reinforces Modibbo Adama University's commitment to fostering strategic collaborations that enhance students' academic success and prepare them to contribute meaningfully to Nigeria's socio-economic development.
