I am an educated person now, I just bagged a B.Sc. in Biology. I even came out with First Class in my course of study, Evelyn said to Zoe.

Wow! Wow! Wow! This was Zoe's reply but scornfully.

Why sound like the siren of an ambulance now? And why the scornful smile?

I just laughed at your ignorance, my sister. I am sorry if that was rude, but I have to let you know the truth.

So in your church mind now, you think you are fully educated because you had a First class in your course of study? Uhmmmm?

Did I say badging a certificate doesn't mean you are educated? No!

But that it isn't proof that you are fully educated.

I log in to Facebook every day to see different sites celebrating people who had First Class or maybe second class upper in their respective courses here in Nigeria and outside the country.

I just smile at those posts and shake my head.

Have I said stepping out of your higher institutions with a First class is wrong? No! In fact, It reveals how studious and diligent you are in your academic works. And this will definitely make you stand before kings and not mere men.

Actually, my smile is as a result of my recent observation about those who had gone ahead of you who also came out with First class in their respective course of study, but are nothing to write home about.

I boarded a motorcycle one day, and you need to see how frustrated the bike man was. He told me he had a second class upper in Civil Engineering and couldn't get a good job all because the country is a mess.

I just sheepishly smile at his stupidity. Reasons being that his spoken English scares me out. I just sounded like the siren of an ambulance the same way I did when Evelyn told me about her academic achievement (that is my way of expressing myself during an embarrassing yet funny situation like this😅😅😅).

My point is, education isn't about badging a certificate or being celebrated as a First class student.

You can have all these and still not be successful in life(you might just need to search for the kind of success I meant).

It takes extra work of finding new ideas, adding new skills, seeking more value for your success.

You cannot have only what your school gave you and convince me you are fully educated. Many pass out of school and you wonder what has changed about them - nothing!

Their composure, attitude towards the situation in the society, behaviours at parks, on the street.......is questioning. Their manner of presentation worth a slap. 😅😂

This makes me ask questions like what makes them differ from an uneducated person.

I call them educated illiterate. 😂😂(I learnt that from my sociology when in school 😅).

You might be wondering how this is possible. How can someone be educated and still be illiterate at the same time? One (education) is meant to overcome the other (illiterate). From my observations, this is the case of many amongst Nigerians.

I strongly expect that proper education should result in improved behavioral exposure and not only improved technical capabilities.

One who is educated should be seen to be educated.

That is, your behaviour must display that fact.

I believe rounded education includes how you should behave in society.

This can be gotten, but not only from the confines of a school.

The illiterate of the 21st century won't be those who can't read and write, but those who can't learn, unlearn and relearn.

I bet you have to read that again☝☝.

So, this morning, I got this question "Aunty, why do we have to write exams?"

At first, I was dumbfounded, I looked at the student who asked the question, I said, this system of education believes that is the only means to test if you got what your teacher taught you.

The student looked at me with a smile and said, aunty, what is your view about writing an exam to see if I have learnt? What if I can only put this into practice and not write it down well?

I became quiet for like 5 minutes and patted the boy.

If a student can be so curious as this that he wants to know why exams must be conducted to test their level of knowledge about a particular subject matter, I wonder what this precious child has been thinking.

I am not against writing exams as a medium to test students' capacity, but my question is, "can that child bring what s/he was taught into real-life situations?"

After forcing theories into these children without any proper way of how they can solve problems, create ideas....we still go-ahead to test if they can produce this theory the way we gave them.

Ma'am, sir, what have you done with what you learned in school? What solving have you brought to the table? Is your engineering solving the problem of our nation?

Who says we should not write the exam?

Can we bring life into our system of education?
Education is life and this what I believe school should give to us.

What's your definition of Education?

What has society or your schools told you about education?

I wouldn't know if going to school is your definition of education or getting a certificate, but whatever you see it to be, we are here to redefine what society told us education is.

I read a post on Twitter a time ago. The post goes thus "we need money to go to school after school, we work to make money" I smiled after reading this and said even those who don't go to school make money.

We should ask ourselves if persons like Bill Gates, Job Steve....are making it as a school drop out, what then is the essence of going to school?

The answer to that is, the tools for all-around education were not included in our curriculum. I believe for a better definition of education, our curriculum has to be looked into.

I am not against sitting in the four walls of a classroom to receive learning which we call education, but I am saying, better education can still be given inside and outside that four walls of a classroom.

I attended a college of education and I understand what it is to be locked in the cage of a classroom with no access to think outside the box. I had to read, cram, and pour out exactly what I was taught.

There was no access for me to add my thoughts, ideas to what I learnt.

Believe me, the school has helped me a lot. I got to meet people with great ideas, values who will in no doubt be of great help to me in the future but we all had to keep our ideas to ourselves and express them outside the school when it would have been very useful in the classroom.

Education, I say is a lifelong learning process.

Do you see that man who can repair appliances with no schooling? He is educated. That man cooking, dressing, making up, the talking you do is part of education.

Education starts the day you are born!

I have my certificate and it is still like I'm illiterate. Is there something I am missing? If my certificate would not be able to cater to my needs, what then is my education for? Or, what exactly is Education?

I believe all these questions have crossed our mind one time or the other, and this is why I will want us to balance what education is on this page.

‘’Education is what remains after one has forgotten what one has learned in school, Albert Einstein’s words.

Education is not the name of any degree or certificate that can be shown to others as proof of learning. Education is how much one can relate the knowledge acquired by formal learning, self-learning, instructions, and moral formations to others in real life through your attitude, actions, language, and character. Schooling, on the other hand, is a formal form of education where students are taught in a classroom about subjects based on a curriculum, a place where teachers direct their lesson plans around the core of the curriculum for the students to be successful according to society. Teaching students how to read and write alone is not the same as educating them. I mean, teaching a man about hooks and lines or the uniqueness of rivers never makes him a fisherman.
It is a sad indictment of what has become of the meaning of education by popular usage that there could be any confusion at all. It is worse than if the idea of “transportation” was reduced to the idea of a bicycle when there are other means of transportation. Odd as even that would be, both “transportation” and “bicycles” are means of getting about, whereas, though schooling is some sort of means to various learning ends, “education”. Education is not a means at all. It is an end in itself.

The inability of many young people seeking admission or those in school right now to differentiate this has made many of them “local Professionals”. Their level of understanding in their areas of studies is within that which was taught in the classroom. There has to be a bigger view about education than the chalk and blackboard ceremony, note copying, writing exams without the proper understanding of what was taught. If the sequential act of “La cram, La pour, La pass, La forgets” was a crime, most students, particularly in this part of the world would be behind bars. Truth is, it is a crime that leaves us caged, not behind prison bars but the bars of our minds like a bird without wings.

The purpose of schooling should be to holistically develop a student’s life and all learning process should be fanned. Schooling as a part of education was supposed to be a place where the potentials of a child are brought to life, where gifts would be explored to make each student stand out but this has been disrupted by guidelines called “curriculum” which has only the building of the student for the formal world in it. In the true sense of it? Even the formal world demands more.

This is why young people must understand the difference between school and education. Many parents need to ensure their children’s schooling is not void of the true spice to life, education. Years ago, at L’Abri fellowship in Switzer land, Francis Schaeffer said “don’t let your children’s schooling get in the way of their education”. Darrow Miller once said, “I had been to school. In fact, I had more schooling than most people in the world and more than many of my peers in the United States. I had put in my time in class, but I had not been educated”. Just like it takes a village to raise a child, it takes a collaboration of concerned minds to educate a child. It is not limited to the teacher’s business. Parents, religious leaders, family healthcare providers, leaders are stakeholders too. Call the t division of labor.

Schooling would be more effective if our inquisitive minds’ critical thinking habits and creativity can be encouraged. I spent years in school learning, I mean, cramming, old recycled facts and figures. Have I said facts and figures are not good? They are. But beyond facts and figures, intellectual, emotional, social, physical capacities should be built and equipped for the real world. If a man is sent to war, his fate is not hinged on his weapon but how he wields it. His win is beyond the knowledge of the history of his enemies, it is reflected in the understanding of their current configuration which influences his fighting strategy.

We need to understand that education does not happen only in a classroom, at a structured period, or informal instruction. Education can take place anytime, anywhere, in a phase o life, in formal and informal ways. Education can take place amid creation, society, culture,e, and work. While we await the restructuring of formal learning to accommodate holistic training, we as humans need to do better for ourselves. The Internet has made life pretty easy as regards learning. The benefits of being surrounded by a network of people from various cultural backgrounds and professional fields can also not be overemphasized. Do not wait to be educated. Get educated for education, not schooling, they say, is the best legacy.
