At 70 years old, Hadi Usman, popularly known as an inventor and self-taught engineer from Gombe State, received an honorary Doctor of Science degree from Gombe State University (GSU) in recognition of his contributions to innovation and technology.
Hadi had no formal Western education. Instead, he attended Qur’anic school and memorised the Holy Qur’an at the age of 12.
Despite not having conventional engineering training, he developed a passion for technology and began creating different devices from an early age. His reported inventions include a radio transmitter, a community radio station, a helicopter powered by a Vespa engine, and other electrical and mechanical devices.
He later reported developing a fuel-free generator and a stove that uses water and air pressure to produce fire, among other inventions.
According to reports, Hadi began his inventive journey in the 1970s, experimenting with electronics and mechanical devices using materials available to him.
His abilities eventually attracted the attention of Gombe State University, which recognised his practical knowledge and inventive work by awarding him an honorary doctorate.
The university later also engaged him in teaching, with reports stating that he lectures students in areas related to electronics and technology.
