Your medical degree not being automatically recognised in Germany does NOT mean rejection.
Here's what actually happens:
Your qualifications go through an equivalence check. If they're not a full match to a German medical degree, you're not shut out, you're given a path forward: the Kenntnisprüfung, a knowledge exam that lets you prove your competence.
Pass it, and you're on your way to Approbation, your full licence to practice in Germany.

Do I need C1 before I apply for jobs?

No, and this is one of the more expensive myths doctors believe about themselves.

The actual requirement is B2 general German plus a passed FSP (which tests clinical communication, not a separate language certificate level). Once you clear those two, you're eligible to apply, hospitals aren't scanning applications for a C1 certificate that doesn't even factor into the licensing pathway.

Where the confusion comes from: doctors assume "more fluent" always means "more employable," so they delay applying while chasing a level nobody's actually requiring. That's months spent waiting for a bar that was never the real bar.

What actually matters to a hospital:

→ B2 German confirmed
→ FSP passed
→ Anabin-recognized university
→ Active MDCN registration
→ Complete, translated file

C1 might make your day-to-day integration smoother once you're working, but it's not a gate you need to clear before applying.

The International Doctor's German Checklist, save this before you start.

Most doctors think "learning German" means one thing. It's actually five layers, and skipping the last three is the #1 reason B2-certified doctors still fail the FSP.

✓ General German, A1 → B2 — your non-negotiable foundation
✓ TELC B2 Certificate, required before you can even register for FSP
✓ Medical German, both registers, how you'd say it to a colleague vs. how you'd say it to a patient. Same word, two versions.
✓ Real listening practice, native pace, regional accents (Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Brandenburg, Berlin), not clean textbook audio
✓ Anamnese & Übergabe structure, patient history-taking and doctor-to-doctor handover. This is literally what the FSP scores you on.

B2 alone gets you in the room. It doesn't get you through the exam.
