As far as Scripture is concerned, the ONLY basis for a girl's family to demand a bride price from her suitor is virginity. We see this in Exodus 22:17.

That is why David paid a bride price for Michal—1 Samuel 18:27. But he did not pay for Abigail—1 Samuel 25:40. Michal was a presumed virgin, while Abigail was not.

Paying bride price for a non-virgin is like paying for food that another man has already eaten. It is your virginity virtue, which is your pride as a woman, that makes you a bride. If you gave it to a man because of Indomie Noodles he bought you, from a Scriptural perspective, that man is your husband, and the Indomie he gave you was your bride price.

Virginity is important. If not, why did God choose the Virgin Mary to give birth to Yeshua (Jesus)?

The overwhelming majority of first-time married Hausa or Fulani Muslim women marry as virgins. Till today, Somali women marry as virgins. Orthodox Tewahedo Christians wed their husbands chaste. They will not even enter a church if they are on their period.

It is ideal if the man is also a virgin, but scripturally, virginity in marriage was only expected from women.

Why? Because God made man for Himself and made women for men.
