JUST IN: UNN Goes Global! Signs Major International Partnership with South African University

The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) has taken another giant step onto the global stage after sealing a landmark partnership with one of South Africa's top universities, Nelson Mandela University.

The historic agreement was officially signed on June 6, 2026, in Gqeberha (formerly Port Elizabeth), South Africa, by UNN Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Simon Uchenna Ortuanya, and Nelson Mandela University Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Sibongile Muthwa.

This strategic partnership is expected to open new opportunities for students, lecturers, and researchers from both institutions, strengthening UNN's growing international reputation.

What Does the Partnership Mean?

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) will focus on:

βœ… Joint research projects and funding opportunities

βœ… Student and staff exchange programmes

βœ… Collaborative academic publications

βœ… International conferences, workshops, and seminars

βœ… Research partnerships in philosophy and other academic fields

βœ… Greater scholarly engagement between both universities

The agreement is expected to provide UNN students and lecturers with increased access to international academic networks and research opportunities.

More Opportunities on the Horizon

Beyond the signing ceremony, UNN officials held discussions with several renowned institutes and centres within Nelson Mandela University.

Some of the key centres discussed include:

- Transdisciplinary Institute for Mandela Studies
- Centre for Philosophy in Africa
- Science Centre
- Centre for High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy
- Centre for Community Technologies
- Chair for Critical Studies in Higher Education Transformation (CriSHET)

These discussions could lead to additional collaborations that may benefit research, innovation, and capacity building at UNN.

UNN Also Engages Australia-Africa Universities Network

In another major development, Prof. Ortuanya and his delegation participated in a high-level meeting of the Australia-Africa Universities Network (AAUN) on June 7, 2026.

The AAUN connects universities across Australia and Africa to promote research, innovation, knowledge sharing, and developmental partnerships.

UNN's participation in the network places the university in a stronger position to establish global collaborations that can attract international research opportunities, academic exchanges, and innovation-driven projects.

Why This Matters

As universities around the world increasingly rely on international partnerships to boost research and academic excellence, this latest achievement signals UNN's determination to compete on the global stage.

The partnership is expected to create new learning opportunities for students, enhance research output, and further strengthen UNN's vision of becoming a world-class institution with international relevance.

From Nsukka to the world β€” UNN is expanding its global footprint and creating new opportunities for the next generation of scholars.
