Punishment - Discipline : A must read.

Many people have heard of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) which occurs when someone returns from war or experiences traumatic and life threatening events (eg. Lekki shooting, r**e, kidnapp, domestic violence, etc)

However, not many people are aware that children also suffer PTSD over parental abuse, bullying, verbal and sexual abuse, dysfunctional homes ( separation, divorce or death of one or both parents), uninteresting ways of teaching and learning and so on.

These children lose their sense of love, safety, empathy towards others, trust and often take solace in drugs, crime against humanity, afterall " you should feel the same pain too".

HOW SAFE IS YOUR CHILDREN'S ENVIRONMENT?

A lot of mental health challenges( ie su***de, anxiety, depression) sprout from being raised in an unsafe environment. This is not limited to physical unsafe environment, it also includes psychological, emotional, and social unsafe environment.

Psychologists connect later adulthood challenges to the childhood experiences. This implies that PSTD might not manifest in early childhood but in later adulthood. In psychology it's called " the return of the repressed". Those adults reenact all forms of abuse on others especially on children as a means of discipline.

What can you do to remedy the situation?

It is not surprising that children of nowadays can navigate through your mobile phones and change TV channels without direct teaching.

What is the rationale behind this? Your answer might be technology BUT that is not the case

Naturally, the mind of the child is structured to function that way. If given the right environment and materials, the children becomes "sensorial explorers" . They learn independently through movement and manipulation of objects. These experiences develop their critical thinking and problem solving skills.

That is why it's important to register your children in schools that provide hands-on activities and experiments.

Learning is never complete if your child can write no 1 to 10 but does not know the quantities.

Learning is never complete if your child can write A to Z but cannot associate the sounds with the appropriate objects.

Learning is never complete if your child eats food but does not understand how or where the food was got from.

As a parent you can also provide hand on experiences for your young children at home.

My greatest motivation in life is adding measurable value to the lives of my students.

On the 20th of October 2020, some Nigerian youths protesting for their rights were shot at Lekki, Lagos Nigeria.
