The motto of Colliery Comprehensive secondary school aka COSCO is De profundis ad lucem meaning out of the depths towards light

The secondary school built for the mining community became a beacon of hope for all and changed destinies for many families. Let us not allow this school to die like many have.

Our fathers did whatever they could to give us a future that is better than they had. As individuals we still strive to do the same. But in these days collaborative action is far superior to individual ones. Even our forefathers knew that. So they created a system that hears from everyone and then make decisions. We have to understand that a better future does not mean we cannot keep the wisdom of our fathers. It means we can grow that wisdom.

It takes a new kind of thinking to get better results. CISCO boys what will it take to give our younger selves or our younger CISCO boys the opportunities that we did not have? Not so much. Just a carton of beer. I know most of us can afford a carton of beer. But imagine what 300 cartons can do to the library. Who is ready to donate a carton?

There was a time when we were proud to be called COSCO boys. I do not know if that is still the case. But those of us who proudly put on the uniforms of the days gone, know what it meant to emerge from darkness into the light. By effort and determination we made it. By dreaming big and burning the candles at night we made it. And we will keep making it because we understand that life does not give you what you like but it gives you what you work for. COSCO boys, keep
working!

This is the year 2016. This is the year of freedom. Freedom from laziness. Freedom from oil money. Freedom from procrastination. Freedom from thinking others will solve our problems. This is the year we take our own destiny in our hands and think hard, work hard, pray hard, and believe hard for the future we desire. We were all made to be like God who does not sleep or slumber, but who comes up with a plan and makes it happen by giving it life. This is the year you learn that the only one standing in your way is your own self. It is not your village, or someone somewhere. It is you. Let us take the bull by the horn, for God almighty has given us all we need to be successful in life. It is in all of us. It is time to wake up that mighty man within and become the champion we were all created to be. Arise Cosco boys! Arise mighty men! Arise the heroes of our time. It is your turn to be great!

So we had independence from the British and we were excited to have self rule for the first time in decades. We couldn't wait for the white man to leave so we can do whatever we wanted without seeking his permission. Today some people even want the white man back. How did we get to thinking we need other people to develop Nigeria for us? Do they love us more than we love ourselves? Do they believe in our future more than we do? National development starts with personal development, matures through community development, enters state or regional development, then emerges as national development. No country is developed by people who cannot individually and collectively work for their own common good. Today commit to developing that small part where you are. National development is all about developing that small corner where you are.

How do we grow the leaders of tomorrow? We start today by showing them the way. By letting them understand that there is a way even when all looks bleak. By helping them understand that though good things do not come easy, yet good things come to those that work for it. To every little boy you see today, give encouragement because you may be talking to the next President of Nigeria.

COSCO boys I salute all of you. Leaders all over the world I greet you all. May God continue to produce leaders, shakers, and movers of society from COSCO. Amen

Happy days ahead. Cosco must never die!

out of the depths towards light is the english translation of De Profundis ad lucem. It was quite reflective of the circumstances that led to building a secondary school for the children of coal miners. Some would say it means from darkness to light. However the school is now shrouded in the darkness of decay, disrepair, and neglect. Some efforts are ongoing to help he lost glory of 'odoma' but now we need all hands on deck. Please join the effort
