Suspension, Silence And The Politics Of Fear: What Is Really Happening To Enugu’s Traditional Institution?

The thin, fragile veil of administrative propriety covering the Enugu State Government under Governor Peter Mbah has finally ripped completely apart, exposing a ruthless reign of political intolerance and draconian intimidation. The recent suspension of His Royal Highness, Igwe Eze William Ezugwu (Eze Ka Eze of Ibagwa-Opi Autonomous Community in Nsukka Local Government Area), signed by the Commissioner for Chieftaincy Affairs, Dr. Charles O. C. Egumgbe, is nothing short of a brazen, political hit job thinly disguised as law enforcement.

The government can throw around all the bureaucratic excuses it wants, citing "high-handedness," failure to establish a cabinet, or lack of town union governance, familiar frivolous and vexatious excuses on the stable of dictatorial governors struggling for the last straw in the face of impending electoral defeat, however, the citizens of Enugu State see right through this transparent charade. The timing of this official hammer is far too deliberate to be a mere coincidence. Igwe Ezugwu’s true "offense" was never about violating Cap 151 of the Traditional Rulers Law. His actual, unforgiveable "crime" in the eyes of the ruling power was opening the revered gates of his palace to host opposition figures, including Peter Obi and Sir Chinyeaka Ohaa, just two weeks prior.

The question Enugu people are asking is, if not, why did this suspension come shortly after the traditional ruler received Peter Obi and other opposition figures at his palace? In Governor Mbah’s Enugu, basic Igbo hospitality extended to opposition leaders is now treated as treason against the state.

This malicious targeting of the Igwe of Ibagwa-Opi is merely the opening salvo in a much broader, sinister campaign of institutional intimidation, similar to harrassment of opposition party meetings. Reliable information reaching us reveals that no fewer than 38 traditional rulers across Enugu State have already been penciled down for similar suspension, harassment, or dethronement. Their collective sin? Refusing to sing low-quality praises to the current administration, refusing to shut their palace doors against worthy sons and daughters of this nation seen as political rivals by the APC government, or simply daring to exchange pleasantries with opposition members in public space.

The message emanating from the Lion Building is chillingly explicit: total political submission or absolute destruction. The administration appears fiercely determined to enforce a single-party hegemony across the state, effectively signaling that every traditional ruler, community leader, and ordinary citizen must fall in line or face state-sponsored victimisation.

If this level of tyrannical overreach, political witch-hunting, and systematic destruction of traditional royal institutions is taking place right now, Ndi Enugu must wake up to the grave danger ahead. Should Governor Peter Mbah secure another term come 2027, the good people of Enugu State will be forced to live with a brutal iron rule where fundamental freedom of association and political expression are completely eradicated. Today, it is the traditional custodians of our heritage being stripped of their crowns; tomorrow, it will be everyday citizens being stripped of their basic human rights. The government must immediately reverse this shameful suspension and stop weaponizing state power against traditional institutions.

This alarming trend of political persecution is precisely why the people of Enugu State must mobilize, rise up, and do everything legally within their power to ensure the election of Sir Chinyeaka Ohaa as Governor come 2027. Enugu needs a seasoned, compassionate administrator who respects democratic values, human dignity, and the sanctity of our traditional institutions.

The emergence of Sir Chinyeaka Ohaa under the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) will break these heavy chains of political oppression, restore the lost glory and pride of the Coal City State, and liberate Ndi Enugu from this suffocating governance. By choosing tested leadership anchored on public accountability and respect for all citizens, Enugu can finally break free from totalitarian politics and firmly set itself on an unstoppable path of genuine progress, economic advancement, and true democratic freedoms

The Anatomy Of A Desperate Recruitment: Ndi Enugu Are Not Fools, Sir Chinyeaka Ohaa is coming

"When a ruler treats you as invisible in times of peace, but crowns you as essential on the eve of battle, he has not recognized your worth, he has simply measured your value as a sacrifice."

For over three years, the administration of Governor Peter Mbah operated under the high-falutin guise of pure technocracy. For over three years, local political structures, community leaders, and dedicated party faithful were ignored, bypassed, and relegated to the background while the government projected an air of self-sufficient governance.

And what has this touted technocracy produced? Where are the working water schemes, the expanded road networks in our rural areas, the functional farm settlements, or the steady power for our towns? Instead, our citizens face increasing hardship, the loss of livelihoods, and economic policies that squeeze local enterprises and leave ndi Enugu poorer and bitter.

Now, with the electoral horizon looming large, the veil has fallen. Yesterday’s announcement of 101 political appointees, Special Advisers, Senior Special Assistants, and Special Assistants, is not a victory for grassroots empowerment. It is an insult to the intelligence of every man and woman in Enugu State. It is a calculated, transactional maneuver designed for one purpose and one purpose only: electoral mobilization.

To the Appointees: Enjoy the Title, But Guard Your Dignity. Note that this is not an indictment of your competence, but a sobering reminder of how this administration views you. Ask yourself where this recognition was during the last 40 months. Ask yourself what administrative emergency suddenly required over 100 new advisers and assistants just as election season draws near. Ask yourself why the core governance, budgetary, and policy decisions were reserved for the so-called "technocrats," while your roles center heavily on mobilization, enlightenment, and grassroots coordination.

The answer is painfully clear. You were not appointed because your expertise was missed for more than three years; you were appointed because the political machinery requires boots on the ground for the upcoming election. You are being called upon to do the heavy lifting, to brave the storm, and to execute the campaign legwork that those so called "technocrats" will never do. Do not lose guard. Do not succumb to artificial gratitude for crumbs thrown from a table that was set without you. Crumbs thrown when the food is almost consumed.

The path forward is simple: collect the resources, but protect the future of our dear state. This money does not belong to any individual or administration, it belongs to the taxpayers of Enugu State. It is public wealth that should have been working for the people from day one. Take the positions and collect the remuneration, as it is your legitimate share of our collective commonwealth.

However, you must refuse to be used as tools for political deception or electoral intimidation. When the time comes to stand before the ballot box, remember how long you were kept waiting in the cold before the appointment and remember that your job ends immediately after election.

Ndi Enugu are far too politically sophisticated to be bought off with last-minute patronage. An administration that treats its citizens as irrelevant during its tenure cannot expect to buy their loyalty at the midnight hour. So graciously accept the appointments, collect the funds, but when the time comes to vote, follow the wind, vote your conscience, and send an undeniable message to Governor Mbah that Enugu State cannot be taken for granted.

Enugu needs a governor who understands the true role of the masses, who values you in times of peace as well as battle, and who takes joy in seeing people thrive. We need a leader who has spent his entire career maximizing the potential and empowerment of every citizen. That leader is Sir Christian Chinyeaka Ohaa, the candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

A new Enugu State is coming, cast your vote for the NDC, protect your ballot, and claim the future we deserve.

When Politics Becomes A bloodbath: An Urgent Call For Global Intervention and Immediate Sanction Against Political Terror In Enugu State

Following an extraordinary emergency meeting convened today by the State Chairman of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Engr. Ibuchukwu Obeta, the Executive Committee issues this open petition to law enforcement authorities, human rights monitors, and international diplomatic bodies.

The NDC unequivocally condemns, in the strongest possible terms, the violent, blood-drenched assault on our peaceful Ward meeting in Obuoffia, Nkanu West Local Government Area, the home ward of our governorship candidate, Sir Chinyeaka Ohaa. This was a calculated, armed strike against democratic engagement, community sovereignty, and the constitutional right to peaceful assembly.

When political violence escalates into open gunfire targeting unarmed citizens, civil discourse gives way to naked terror. Reports confirm that this operation was spearheaded by one Mr. Odogwu, Senior Special Assistant to the Nkanu West Local Government Chairman, Hon. John Chukwuma Ogbodo, acting under political patronage. The assault left key local leaders severely wounded, including NDC Ward Chairman Madueke Ngene, Youth Leader Maduka Ngene, community member Victor Onovo, and Councillor Donald Onovo, who was recently subjected to a coercive suspension by the Council for resisting political alignment with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

This incident mirrors a broader, disturbing pattern across the region, including similar armed disruptions of opposition PDP ward gatherings in Akpugo and Obe. Grounded in growing grassroots rejection of current leadership trends, perpetrators of political intimidation are replacing democratic persuasion with raw force.

Attempting to crush opposition by shooting local leaders in their own communities exposes a desperate inability to win through ideas or performance.

Adding to the outrage surrounding this tragedy, information available to us indicates that after the primary suspect was questioned by security operatives, the Local Government Chairman personally went to welcome them the suspects at the airport, taking pictures, in a public display of solidarity with violence.

Our Demands and Declarations

The NDC Enugu State Chapter hereby formally alerts the Federal Government of Nigeria and the International Community:

1. Safety of the Opposition: The responsibility for the safety, freedom, and lives of opposition members across Enugu State now rests squarely upon the ruling APC leadership. Should any opposition figure face further violence, political persecution, or harm, the ruling party will be held fully accountable.

2. Unbiased Federal Investigation: We call upon the Inspector General of Police, the DSS, and INTERPOL to initiate an immediate, independent probe free from state-level political interference to arrest and prosecute both the perpetrators on the ground and their backers.

3. International Sanctions and Surveillance: We petition the US Embassy, British High Commission, EU, AU, ECOWAS, Commonwealth, and the UN to apply visa restrictions, travel bans, and formal human rights monitoring against all individuals complicit in political violence in the region.
* Unbroken Resolve: Sir Chinyeaka Ohaa, presently on an official trip abroad, has reaffirmed that authority is built on public trust and service, not fear. The violence in Obuoffia will not intimidate the populace; it only reinforces the collective resolve to uphold democratic rights.

Let all parties take note of the unequivocal truth highlighted by our State Secretary, Hon. Nebo Chukwujekwu Emmanuel: NO INDIVIDUAL OR POLITICAL FACTION HAS A MONOPOLY OF VIOLENCE.

The citizens of Enugu State will no longer tolerate the erosion of their fundamental rights. We demand immediate justice, legal accountability, and the total protection of opposition voices.

*Enugu’s Tax Harvest of Tears: Peter Mbah's Monument of Exclusions And The Cry of Traders, Motorists and Transporters*

The tragicomedy of governance currently unfolding in Enugu State has reached a fever pitch, degenerating into an unvarnished economic siege against the very citizens the government swore to protect. The civil unrest that recently rocked the Enugu State especially, the Main Market axis was not an isolated event; it was the inevitable eruption of an overburdened, frustrated, and economically strangled populace reaching its absolute breaking point under an administration determined to squeeze every last naira out of its people through relentless taxation.

Yet, true to form, the Enugu State Government has responded with insultingly disingenuous spin. Through press statements dismissing the uprising as drivers merely "seeking designated parking spaces" and blaming "desperate opposition infiltrators," the administration attempts to cover up the cries of daily earners. To claim that hundreds of motorists, commercial bus drivers, and tricycle operators shut down major transport hubs simply to ask where to park is laughable, and at best, a futile attempt to rewrite reality. As usual, Governor Mbah hides behind his finger!

Indeed, Enugu State’s reported Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) rose dramatically from ₦180.5 billion in 2024 to ₦406.77 billion in 2025, according to figures presented by the Executive Chairman of the Enugu State Internal Revenue Service, Emmanuel Ekene Nnamani. The administration routinely boasts that this surge reflects improved revenue mobilisation, central e-ticketing, and technological reforms.

However, behind every inflated revenue statistic are real human beings paying the ultimate price. They are the traders whose shops were bulldozed without compensation, or alternative spaces, under the pretext of urban renewal; the artisans struggling to stay afloat amid hyperinflation and soaring fuel prices; and the commercial drivers whose daily operational levies jumped from ₦350 to over ₦1,000 in just 20 months, on top of mandatory park fees, heavy fines, and exorbitant ticket charges.

And now, there is the newly increased ₦100 daily access fee charged to tricycle operators simply for accessing the park. This is in addition to the ₦750 daily levy these same tricycle operators (Keke riders) are required to pay for plying roads that, in many places, remain neglected. For operators already battling rising fuel prices, maintenance costs, and declining purchasing power, every additional charge represents another deduction from an already fragile livelihood.

They are the small-business owners crushed by compulsory heavy taxation levies and the young workers striving to survive another difficult day in Coal City.

The outcry raised at Holy Ghost, Old Park, and across the state deserves honest accountability, not arrogant dismissals, state propaganda, or insulting political semantics.

To understand the callousness of the current administration, one only needs to look at its punitive fiscal architecture and trail of unfulfilled promises.

Already suffocated by rising fuel costs and multiple daily charges, commercial operators are penalized for accessing transport hubs built on the ruins of their former livelihoods. Rather than offering relief, government policies actively drive transporters back onto neglected roads riddled with potholes.

These same citizens remain victims of the grand promise, "Water in 180 days" pledge, a promise made nearly four years ago that has delivered empty taps and broken faith. Furthermore, after the insensitive demolition of livelihoods to construct modern transit terminals, ill-concieved urban renewal, the newly erected lock-up shops were priced out of reach at ₦15 million to ₦20 million. Consequently, these facilities sat largely deserted, standing as high-priced monuments of exclusion, until public outrage forced the government into aggressive enforcement actions to mask its policy failures.

Meanwhile, phantom achievements such as the touted 260 Type-2 health centers and smart schools remain far more vibrant in government press releases than in the everyday reality of ordinary citizens.

One must ask: what is the color of this administration's heart? Generating state revenue should empower the people, not serve as an extractive weapon against the working class. When a government measures its success solely by the size of its treasury while its citizens suffer under unsustainable taxation, that governance is a catastrophic failure.

Reacting to the civil disturbances as witnessed in some parts of Enugu metropolis, the Nigeria Democratic Party, NDC, governorship candidate, Sir Chinyeaka Ohaa, said, "Ndi Enugu cannot continue to endure this predatory trajectory under Governor Peter Mbah. The time has come for the electorate to take a decisive stand and vote them out come 2027."

Ohaa continued, "We shall deploy a strategic policy framework focused on immediate relief, structural reform, and alternative revenue generation framework to replace Governor Mba's inhuman internally generated revenue scheme. Mbah's primitive punitive inforcemenent shall be replaced with growth-oriented fiscal policies. We shall stabilize household economics while maintaining state infrastructure funding through transparent PPP, Fair Tax Policy, and accruable revenue from Federation Account, FAAC. We shall abolish Mba's informal and multi-tiered levies to eliminate duplicate charges on small businesses, shop owners and transport operators, and most importantly, on May 29, 2027, we shall announce, and effect, *immediate moratorium* for micro-enterprises, tax exemptions for vulnerable informal operators such as keke drivers, other transport operators, street vendors and small artisans.

"On Land and Property sector, we shall reform and recalibrate Mbah's prohibitive Land Use and Property Charges by revising, downward, the present high land-related fees, commercial property taxes, and developmental levies to rebuild confidence in, and boost, real estate business in Enugu, thereby lowering housing costs for Ndi Enugu. We shall introduce phased C-of-O billing system, replace the present high upfront capital requirements for Certificates of Occupancy (C-of-O) with deferred or installmental-based models to encoursge property registration. In a short while, we shall unveil the details of what we have for Ndi Enugu going forward from May 29, 2027."

OFFICIAL STATEMENT
Office of the Media Aide to Sir Christian Chinyeaka Ohaa
NDC Governorship Candidate, Enugu State.

16th September, 2026

Yesterday, I visited the hospital where our party members who were shot during a politically motivated attack at Ihuani Awkunanaw, Obuofia, Nkanu West LGA, Enugu state, on Saturday, 12/09/26, are receiving treatment. What I saw was deeply painful and heartbreaking.

The scale of the violence inflicted on peaceful NDC members is far more severe than earlier reported. *But for devine intervention, the known gunmen aimed at mass murder.*

Below is the current medical situation of the victims as at the time of my visit:

1) Onovo Donald, Ward Councillor – shot in the head, neck, leg and hand. Scan shows a total of 5 bullets in his body.

2) Maduka Ngene – shot in the right hand.

3) Ogbodo Gloria – shot in the right breast and hand. She is still carrying 1 bullet in the breast.

4) Obinna Owoh – shot in both legs, both hands and the chest. Scan shows a total of 6 bullets in his body.

5) Ugwu Nnaemeka – shot in the leg, hand and right eye. He is still carrying the bullets in his body.

6) Nwagbara Chinonso – shot all over his body, mostly at the back. He is carrying 9 bullets in his body.

7) Onovo Victor – shot directly in the stomach with multiple bullets. 6 bullets were removed during surgery.

8) Madueke Ngene, Ward Chairman – shot in the chest, waist and hand. He is still carrying 3 bullets in his body.

Apart from Onovo Victor, who has undergone surgery which lasted over 4 hours, the remaining victims with bullets in their bodies are billed for surgery in the coming days as the Doctors deem fit.

We are glad to report that the victims are receiving maximum medical care and are being fully supported by families and party faithfuls who have stood solidly with them since the attack.

It is now three days since this dastardly attack. Neither the Governor of Enugu State, Mr Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, nor the Chairman of Nkanu West Local Government Area, Mr John Chukwuma Ogbodo, has issued any official statement on the incident. The police released a statement, yet not a single person has been arrested.

This silence and inaction are unacceptable. It only strengthens the suspicion of many that those responsible for this attack are being shielded by government officials.

Section 215(4) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended) makes the Governor of a state the Chief Security Officer of the State. It provides that the Commissioner of Police shall comply with the directions of the Governor with respect to the maintaining and securing of public safety and public order within the State.

Reacting to the situation, Sir Christian Chinyeaka Ohaa said: "The sight of our members lying in hospital beds with bullets lodged in their bodies is a painful reminder of the growing culture of political violence in our state. No Nigerian should be shot or injured for attending a peaceful political meeting. I call on the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to take decisive action on this matter to restore faith in our democracy, and ensure that justice is served. We will not be intimidated. We will continue our peaceful campaign until the will of Ndi Enugu prevails.

We urge all well-meaning Nigerians to rise up and demand that those in authority do the needful by immediately identifying, arresting, and prosecuting the culprits and their sponsors."

Sir Christian Chinyeaka Ohaa and the entire NDC family in Enugu State remain resolute. Justice must be done.

Ohaa Decries Hardship in Enugu as Keke, Bus Drivers Block Roads Over Heavy Taxation

ENUGU, ENUGU STATE — Sir Chinyeaka Christian Ohaa, the NDC Governorship Candidate in Enugu State, has expressed deep concern over the hardship and frustration facing residents as tricycle (keke) and commercial bus operators reportedly blocked roads in protest against what they described as excessive taxation and levies.

Ohaa said the development is a clear indication of the growing economic pressure on ordinary citizens, warning that government revenue policies must not become a burden that pushes workers and small business operators into further hardship.

He stressed that taxes should be reasonable, transparent and tied to improved public services, rather than becoming instruments of intimidation or excessive financial pressure on citizens.

The NDC candidate assured Ndi Enugu that, if elected governor in May 2027, his administration will pursue a “Fear Tax” policy—an approach designed to eliminate arbitrary and oppressive taxation, while creating a fair and transparent revenue system that encourages businesses and protects the livelihoods of ordinary people.

«“Government must exist to make life easier for the people, not to make survival more difficult. Ndi Enugu deserve a tax system they can understand, afford and trust,” Ohaa said.»

He called for immediate dialogue between the state government and transport operators to resolve the crisis peacefully and prevent further disruption to movement and economic activities across the state.

When Politics Becomes A Battlefield: Gunmen Disrupt NDC Ward Meeting in Ohaa’s Obuoffia Community, Nkanu West Local Government Area

The violent disruption of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) Ward meeting in Obuoffia, Nkanu West Local Government Area, represents more than a localized political skirmish. It stands as a calculated assault on democratic engagement, community sovereignty, and the constitutionally guaranteed right to peaceful assembly. When political intimidation escalates into open gunfire against unarmed party faithfuls, the motives of those behind such actions must be confronted directly.

The attack unfolded during a peaceful statewide NDC ward meeting, directly targeting the political ward of NDC governorship candidate, Sir Chinyeaka Ohaa. Reports allege that the operation was spearheaded by one Mr. Odogwu, Senior Special Assistant to the Nkanu West Local Government Chairman, Hon. John Chukwuma Ogbodo, acting under the apparent sponsorship of higher political interests.

The assault left key local leaders severely wounded, including NDC Ward Chairman Madueke Ngene, Youth Leader, Maduka Ngene, community member Victor Onovo, and Councillor Donald Onovo, the latter having recently faced a coercive suspension by the Council for resisting political alignment with the ruling party, APC.

This pattern of violence reveals a strategy driven by political desperation, similar to sponsored political attacks on PDP party faithfuls in their ward meetings in Akpugo and Obe wards of the same Nkanu West Council Area last month. Confronted by growing grassroots momentum for alternative leadership, those in power appear to be replacing democratic persuasion with raw force. Attempting to crush opposition by shooting local leaders in their own communities exposes a fundamental weakness, an inability to win through ideas, track records, or the democratic process.

These events demand immediate and decisive accountability. The Police Command and relevant federal security agencies must execute an independent investigation free from political influence, ensuring that both the perpetrators on the ground and their sponsors face legal consequences. Selective enforcement and institutional silence will only deepen the climate of impunity.

Ohaa, who is presently on oversea trip said, "for the citizens of Enugu, this incident serves as a crucial turning point. True authority is forged through public trust, service, and governance, not through terror. The violence in Obuoffia should not breed fear, but rather strengthen the collective resolve to uphold democratic rights and reject political repression across the state."
