THERMAL CONSISTENCY (U - VALUE) OF A BUILDING
What is the U - VALUE of A Building?
The amount of heat energy a building, its material and component members emits or releases is known as the U-Value of such building.
Here is the gist: The higher the U-Value of a building or its component(member parts) the better the insulation ability of such building which enhances its comfort-ability; the lower the U-Value of a building, the need for a more insulating material or properties needed(which means when a building has low U-value rate,it tends to be cold and frost might likely occur)
A continent like Antarctica or Snow falling countries needs a higher U-Value Structure, components & materials to cope with such weather condition..While in northern Nigeria,a low U-Value Building structure, components and material is needed for comfortable livelihood.
When a building has low U-value,it resists heat emission or transfer, and improves the cold condition of such structure
To determine the Thermal resistance of a Structural or building Component : the thickness(L) of a building component is divided by the Component's material thermal Conductivity(ƛ)
That's to say :
R(Heat Resistance) = L / ƛ
where R = Thermal Resistance of A Component
L = Thickness of the building Component
ƛ = constant Thermal Conductivity of the Material used in the Building Component
Therefore The U - VALUE of A Building or Its Components is determined by : U-Value = 1 / R or 1 / ƩR ( for a component made with various materials)

VACUUM DEWATERING FLOORING SYSTEM
Vacuum Dewatered Flooring (VDF) is a special type of Flooring Technique to achieve High Strength, Longer Life, Better Finish and Faster Work. This type of floor is suitable for high abrasion & heavy traffic movement.
TheVDF is a system for laying high quality concretefloor. Concrete Vacuum Dewatering System.
What is VDF Flooring or Vacuum Dewatered Flooring
VDF Flooring stands for Vacuum Dewatered Flooring. This is a special technique to do the Concrete Flooring to increase the Compressive Strength, Tensile Strength, Abrasion Resistance and to minimize the Shrinkage and Floor Wraps.
VDF Flooring results in High Strength, Longer Life, Better Finish and Faster Work. This type of floor is suitable for high abrasion & heavy traffic movement.
The Vacuum Dewatered Flooring or VDF Flooring is a system for laying high quality concrete floors where the key is Dewatering of Concrete by Vacuum Process wherein surplus water from the concrete is removed immediately after placing and vibration, thereby reducing the water: cement ratio to the optimum level.
Procedure of VDF Flooring
Tying Lines (Threads) as per the slope requirements
Laying Guide Rails to every 4 meters using tape & spirit level or as required in straight lines along the Lines(thread), taking levels as per the slope and fixing them using concrete also called grouting and left to set for a minimum of 6 - 24 hours
Pouring the concrete in between the laid guard rails or alignment lines and spreading using Shovel
Vibrating the concrete with a poker vi****or especially to the sides of the panels
Final leveling of the concrete using the Straight Edge/Bull Float/Aluminium range
A system of lower mats & top mat is laid on the green concrete & this is attached to a vacuum pump. This draws out surplus water if any. (Further dewatering decreases the water cement ratio below the required level thereby causing undulations in the surface, loss in strength and formation of cracks.)
The concrete is left to stiffen. When the base concrete has stiffened to the point when foot traffic leaves an imprint of about 3-6 mm and any bleed water should now have evaporated, but the concrete should have a wet sheen, Floor Hardener is applied at an even application rate
Application of Power Floater or manual floating mechanism
on the surface until the surface is sufficiently compacted & levelled with no major lines appearing any more
Final finishing using Power Trowel and trowelling until the required finish is achieved. Finish could be any of the Smooth Finish, Sand Finish or Line Finish.
Benefits of VDF Flooring – Vacuum Dewatered Flooring
Increased Compressive strength by more than 50%.
Reduced Cement consumption by more than 30% as no cement is required separately for finishing.
Increased Abrasion resistance by more than 50%.
Increased wear resistance.
Minimum dusting & crack formation.
Minimum dry and plastic shrinkage and floor wraps.
Uniform homogeneous floor with High flatness accuracy.
Lower water permeability due to increased density.
High early strength minimizes damage on newly cast floors.
Earlier utilization and Reduced maintenance cost.
Typical Application Areas of VDF Flooring
Warehouses, Industiral complex
Roads, Sports Courts
Cellars, Parking Areas
Production Areas
Pharmaceutical Companies
As the base floor for Epoxy & PU Floorings

The Secret of God's Creation - The EARTH
FOUNDATION
Foundation is that sub-structural part of a building component that ensures that a building load(s) are transmitted to the subsoil safely, economically and without any unacceptable movement during the construction period and anticipated building life.
Loads are transmitted evenly through the mass concrete foundation footing at an angle of 45°...the more reason the foundation footing should be 3 times the thickness of the sandcrete or concrete block.
How does the Ground reacts to reduce the foundation????
Subsoil under the foundation is compressed and reacts by exerting an upward pressure to resist the foundation loading.
However, if foundation loading exceeds maximum passive pressure of subsoil (bearing capacity) a downward movement of the foundation might occur causing Uneven settlement (Sinking).
REMEDIAL Measures
The remedy is to increase the plan size of foundation area in order to reduce the load per unit area or alternatively reduce the loadings being carried by the foundation..
Secondly, singly reinforced mats or beams can be placed or laid on strip foundation trenches where the amount of Tensile load exceeds Concrete Own compressive load.
NEXT Time.. We will discuss about REINFORCEMENTS
