Historical Background
The idea of establishing a Catholic University by the Catholic Diocese of Enugu was first presented by the Bishop of Enugu (Emeritus), Most Rev. He wanted a university with the nam
e “Cor Unum”, a university that could represent the unity of all educational activities of the diocese. In spite of the effort of the bishop to the project take off immediately, it did not. The bishop later discussed his plan with Rev. Christian Anieke whom he appointed the provost of the Institute of Ecumenical Education in February 2006. Rev. Anieke understood the importance of a university project for the diocese and took the bull by the horn. He assured the bishop that he would use all the resources he had to ensure that he built a university for the diocese. At a meeting in the Council Chamber of the Institute of Ecumenical Education, Thinkers Corner, Enugu, on 9 November 2009, the convener of the meeting, the Rev. Professor Christian Anieke, Provost of the Institute, informed the participants that he had applied for a university that should belong to the Catholic Diocese of Enugu. He also assured the members that he would bring all the financial resources needed for a takeoff of the project. Those on the membership list included:

As can be seen, the Planning and Implementation Committee included the clergy, reputable public officers and experienced university administrators, some of who had received training in the National Universities Commission and were well acquainted with the approved guidelines for the establishment of universities in Nigeria. The Committee met several times to brainstorm and agree on the critical issues of the vision, mission, philosophy and objectives of the proposed university and the preparation of the three strategic documents, namely: the Academic Brief, the University Law and the Master Plan. The Planning and Implementation Committee and its sub-committees tackled the assignment not only expeditiously but also with a high degree of commitment which was more or less inspired by the sincerity of purpose demonstrated by the Rev. Professor Christian Anieke, who provided all the logistics needed for the smooth execution of the sub-committee assignments. Indeed there is always an aura of success and victory surrounding a person of goodwill and so given his sincerity of purpose and support of the PIC, the Committee was ready in record time to invite SCOPU for the first verification visit of the proposed university. Meanwhile in one of the meetings, Rev. Anieke informed the members that Prof. Okojie had urged him and Prof. Onah to name the university after a bishop who had worked in the diocese. They settled for Bishop Okoye, who contributed a lot to the growth of the diocese, including acquiring the land being used as the permanent site of the university. The first name was written as Bishop Okoye Ecumenical University, which was later modified as Godfrey Okoye University (GO University). The First Verification Visit
That visit took place on June 10, 2008. The Standing Commission on Private Universities (SCOPU) of the National Universities Commission, under the able leadership of Professor O. Onwudike, arrived at the Institute of Ecumenical Education, Thinkers Corner, Enugu, to inspect the take-off site of the proposed university as well as its proposed permanent site at Ugwuomu-Nike, twenty kilometers from Enugu. Apart from the members of the Planning and Implementation Committee who were present, the Enugu Catholic Community, the Governing Council of the Institute of Ecumenical Education and members of the Diocesan Curia and priests of the Catholic Diocese of Enugu were all present to receive the august visitors. Present also were the representatives of tertiary institutions in the state and friends of the proposed university from Austria. If physical presence was an accurate reflection of stakeholder interest and people’s desire, the Enugu Christian Community had by the quantity and quality of presence on that occasion indicated a strong interest in the proposed university. It was clear from the massive turnout and support that the Enugu Christian Community was out in support of a new approach to university education, where discipline would not be an absurdity but a creed, an approach that would give the youth an opportunity of sound intellectual and spiritual growth, deep-rooted understanding of the unity of knowledge and commitment to the philosophy of dialogue. The outcome of the first visit was good. Indeed the chairman of SCOPU had this to say before their departure:
“There is not much to be done in the Academic Brief and the Law. You have to work on the Master Plan. Thank you for welcoming us, taking care of us and showing us around. You can count on us that we will be able to come within the shortest possible time for the second visit, once you have incorporated our agreements and taken care of the Master Plan.”
Second Verification Visit
The project was very fortunate indeed in having as kin-pins the Chairman of PIC, Professor Julius Onah and Rev. Professor Christian Anieke whose strong logistic support, display of pastoral care and profoundly illuminating capacity to manage uncertainty kept members of the sub-committees fully alert and well focused enough for things that needed to be done to qualify for the second verification visit. SCOPU arrived (on invitation), on 11 April 2009 for the second verification visit under a new leader, Professor J. D. Amin. The usual large turn-out was there to welcome the team. The Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Enugu, Most Rev. Dr. C. V. Onaga, was not only present but also accompanied the team to the proposed permanent site at Ugwuomu-Nike where a lot of work had been done to leave no one in doubt about the sincerity of purpose ad oneness of mind behind the project. The new Chairman of SCOPU and the desk-officers could not conceal their feelings. Indeed at the wrap up session, the Chairman said, “You have worked hard and well. It remains for us to go back and report to the National Universities Commission, whose decision regarding any further action would be communicated to you.” As the team departed, hopes rose very high in many quarters. The Board inspired several on-the-ground activities designed to enhance the work of the PIC. The activities included the intensification of renovation work on the take-off site of the proposed university, commencement of serious work on the permanent site and undertaking of a study visit to certain private universities West of the Niger by the Chairman of the Board, Professor Joseph Ikechukwu Chidobem, the Provost of the Institute of Ecumenical Education, Rev. Professor Christian Anieke and Professor Festus C. Eze as member of the PIC. The first private university visited was Cetep City University, Lagos, which took place on Tuesday, October 21, 2009. The second university visited (on Wednesday, 22 October) was Babcock University, Illisham-Remo, Ogun State, a faith-based university founded in 1999. It was in the midst of a most illuminating and productive engagement with the President/Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor J. A. Kayode Makinde and his team which included the Director of Academic Planning, Professor Ademola Tayo and the Professor of Guidance and Counseling (who functioned as Chief of Staff) that the information that the National Executive Council sitting in Abuja had approved Godfrey Okoye University as one of the seven new private universities in Nigeria was delivered to the university. Approval of the University
On 27 October 2009, the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission formally informed the proprietor (the Catholic Bishop of Enugu) that consequent on having satisfied the requirements, Godfrey Okoye University had been accorded provisional approval to take-off as a private University in Nigeria. The terms and conditions of the approval were carefully stated. The proprietor was also invited to the NUC office in Abuja for the formal presentation of the provisional licence on Tuesday, 3 November 2009. Take-Off Arrangements

Major Milestone: Godfrey Okoye University Teaching Hospital Approved for Housemanship Training
Godfrey Okoye University has achieved a historic breakthrough in medical education as the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) officially listed the Godfrey Okoye University Teaching Hospital (GOUNITH) among the approved private teaching hospitals for housemanship training, granting an approved quota of 30 medical house officers.
This national recognition follows the university's earlier success in securing full accreditation for its College of Medicine from the National Universities Commission (NUC). In Nigerian higher education, achieving both milestones in swift succession is a rare feat, one that guarantees pioneer medical students complete their degrees and transition directly into housemanship without administrative delays or academic bottlenecks.
The housemanship accreditation highlights the state-of-the-art facilities, clinical standards, and dedicated leadership at GOUNITH, positioning Godfrey Okoye University as a top destination for medical training.

From regional champions to national first runners-up, our students continue to fly the GOUNI flag high.
Godfrey Okoye University has achieved another remarkable milestone on the national stage as our brilliant representatives, Amolo Success and Ekwe Princess, secured an impressive second position at the Chartered Institute of Personnel Management National Quiz Competition.
Representing the South East zone after their dominant victory at the regional level, the unstoppable duo from the Faculty of Management Sciences competed against regional champions from all 6 geopolitical zones of the country.
In an incredible display of intellectual rigour, the competition unfolded through six intense rounds. Godfrey Okoye University and Benson Idahosa University achieved perfect scores across all six rounds without failing a single question, forcing a dramatic tiebreaker to determine the national champion.
Following three fierce tiebreaker rounds, Godfrey Okoye University emerged as the overall national second-position winner after missing just one question, while Benson Idahosa University took first position.
Building on their regional crown, Amolo Success of the Accounting Department and Ekwe Princess of the Economics Department have once again proven the academic strength of Godfrey Okoye University and the Faculty of Management Sciences on a national platform.
The top winners will officially receive their prestigious awards at the upcoming CIPM National Conference in September.

Overall Best Graduating Student Egiyi Otitochukwu receives 450,000 Naira, the Best Arts Student award, and a 50 percent scholarship to study at Godfrey Okoye University.
The Vice-Chancellor of Godfrey Okoye University, Rev. Fr. Prof. Christian Anieke, has urged the graduating Class of 2026 of Godfrey Okoye University Secondary School to make wise decisions about their future by choosing institutions that will sustain and build on the solid foundation they have received.
Rev. Fr. Prof. Christian Anieke gave the advice during the Valedictory Ceremony for the graduating students held at the Justice Cordelia Chukwura Convocation Arena, Thinkers Corner, Enugu.
The Vice-Chancellor commended the Administrator, Principal, and members of staff of the secondary school for their dedication in nurturing the students academically, morally, and spiritually. He encouraged the graduates to continue their educational journey at Godfrey Okoye University, describing it as an institution where they would continue the narrative of success already established in their secondary education.
According to him, Godfrey Okoye University offers a wide range of courses, all of which are approved and accredited by the National Universities Commission (NUC). He noted that the university is ranked among the ten best universities in Nigeria and remains the leading private university east of the Niger. He further stated that the institution is committed to producing graduates who are employable, morally upright, and spiritually grounded, stressing that academic excellence, discipline, and sound values remain its watchwords.
As part of the ceremony, the Vice-Chancellor presented cash awards to outstanding students. Kingsley Edeh and Cecilia Nworie received 120,000 Naira each for the Best in Character award. Okoye Favour won 150,000 Naira as the Best Science Student, while Egiyi Otitochukwu received 150,000 Naira as the Best Arts Student. Egiyi Otitochukwu, who emerged as the Overall Best Graduating Student, was also awarded 300,000 Naira and a 50 percent scholarship to study at Godfrey Okoye University.
The Administrator of Godfrey Okoye University Secondary School, Rev. Fr. Anthony Chukwu, commended the Vice-Chancellor and principal officers of the university for their support while eulogizing the commitment and dedication of the school management team and staff.
In her address, the Principal, Rev. Sr. Chibuzor Iloh, expressed appreciation to Rev. Fr. Prof. Christian Anieke as well as the management and staff for their unwavering support. She described the six-year journey of the graduating students as one marked by both challenges and memorable achievements, noting that the school has remained committed to nurturing intellectual excellence and sound character. She urged the graduates to live purposeful lives guided by courage and integrity, while also appreciating parents for entrusting the school with their children.
Speaking on behalf of the parents, His Royal Highness Igwe Marius Ahamu commended the secondary school for its discipline, commitment to academic excellence, and zero tolerance for malpractice. Additionally, the Bursar of the university, Prof. Mrs. Modesta Egiyi, encouraged the students to remain dedicated and committed to their studies to achieve outstanding performance. In her valedictory address, Miss Otitochukwu Egiyi expressed deep gratitude to God, her parents, and her colleagues for their support.

Godfrey Okoye University and Taraba State University officially sign a Memorandum of Understanding to drive joint academic, technological, and research excellence.
Godfrey Okoye University, Enugu, and Taraba State University, Jalingo, have officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding aimed at strengthening academic, research, and technological collaboration between the two institutions.
The agreement was signed at the Senate Chamber of Godfrey Okoye University, Thinkers Corner, Enugu, by the Vice Chancellor of Godfrey Okoye University, Rev. Fr. Prof. Christian Anieke, and the Vice Chancellor of Taraba State University, Prof. Sunday Paul Bako.
The strategic framework covers extensive collaboration across several key areas, including Biotechnology and Molecular Sciences, DNA learning and Genomics Research, Agricultural and Biotechnology Engineering, Renewable Energy, Entrepreneurship, Teaching and Research Exchange, International Grant Mobilisation, and Sports Development.
Speaking during the signing ceremony, Rev. Fr. Prof. Christian Anieke described the partnership as a significant milestone in the pursuit of academic excellence. He assured Taraba State University of GOUNI's total commitment, pledging to freely share the university's expertise in DNA learning and entrepreneurship while also opening doors to international academic networks like Africa-UniNet and the STEPs Programme.

Vice Chancellor of Godfrey Okoye announces an extra 1 million Naira prize for secondary school alumni who emerge as VC for One Day at GOUNI.
The Vice Chancellor of Godfrey Okoye University, Rev. Fr. Prof. Christian Anieke has encouraged graduating students of Godfrey Okoye University Secondary School to embrace hard work and good character as essential virtues for success in life.
Rev. Fr. Prof. Anieke gave the advice when some of the graduating students paid him a courtesy visit at his office in Thinkers Corner, Enugu.
Emphasizing that good character and dedication are indispensable for achieving greatness, the Vice Chancellor urged the students to continue their academic journey at Godfrey Okoye University, where they would build upon the solid foundation already laid for them.
In a major incentive to spur academic excellence, Rev. Fr. Prof. Anieke announced that any alumnus or alumna of the secondary school who enrols at the university and emerges as the Vice Chancellor for One Day will receive an additional 1 million Naira as prize money. This reward comes in addition to existing package benefits, which include a full scholarship, an official visit to the Enugu State Governor, the opportunity to function as Vice Chancellor for a day, presiding over the University Senate, and other exclusive privileges.

The Head Teacher of Godfrey Okoye University Nursery and Primary School, Mrs. Ujunwa Ajibo-Eze described Cultural Day as a vital event that tells the rich stories, traditions, and way of life of different people and communities.
Mrs. Ajibo-Eze made the remark during the school's colourful Cultural Fiesta and Valedictory Ceremony. She explained that the event aims to promote cultural dialogue, reduce stereotypes among ethnic groups, and provide young learners with a vibrant platform to develop creativity, showcase their skills, and deeply appreciate their diverse heritage.
