Celebrating academic triumphs, alumni partnerships, and a surprise engagement all in one unforgettable midday gathering.

The midday prayer at Godfrey Okoye University transformed into a grand arena of celebration today as the university management, staff, and students gathered to honour the brilliant legal minds who clinched victory at the maiden edition of the National Universities Commission (NUC) Debate Competition, organized in partnership with the NYSC.

The champions from the Faculty of Law, Favour Egbogu and Kosisochukwu Ajoiyi, were treated to a hero’s welcome for bringing immense distinction to the institution. The Vice-Chancellor, Rev. Fr. Prof. Christian Anieke personally presented each winner with a prize of 100 euros and a rechargeable fan. In the spirit of rewarding excellence, the Director of the Directorate of Competitions, Mrs. Uchanta Chukwu was gifted a premium juicer for her tireless dedication and strategic mentorship that paved the way for the team's historic triumph.

Fr. Prof. Anieke used the platform to remind the student body that the upcoming 2025/2026 Students’ Week is strictly scheduled to run from Wednesday, June 10 to June 12. Emphasizing that attendance is mandatory, the Vice-Chancellor warned that absenteeism would attract strict disciplinary actions, urging all students to participate actively.

Adding to the day's excitement, a distinguished alumna of the university and CEO of ReginaMax Immigration Services (a prominent Canadian Immigration Consultant), Ms. Nneka Anieze was present to shower the debate winners with an additional cash reward of N50,000 each. Ms. Anieze, who went down memory lane to share how the Vice-Chancellor’s personal benevolence sponsored her education from secondary school through her university graduation, announced a massive give-back initiative. She is partnering with her alma mater to offer comprehensive visa and immigration consultancy services to GOU staff and students at a heavily discounted 30% rate, aiming to bring transparency and credibility to international travel processing.

The celebratory atmosphere during the midday assembly reached an absolute climax with a surprise, heartwarming engagement proposal. The romantic gesture set the stage for a grand simulation of a traditional inter-tribal wedding between the Igbo and Yoruba cultures, scheduled to headline the highly anticipated Cultural Day during the upcoming Unity Week.

From raw ideas to polished papers: Highlights from the Department of History and International Studies' research seminar.

The Department of History and International Studies at Godfrey Okoye University has taken a proactive step toward fostering academic excellence by organizing a comprehensive seminar on Project Writing for its 300 and 400-level students. Held in May 2026, the event aimed to demystify the undergraduate research process and instil confidence in final-year students.

The workshop provided a detailed roadmap of the entire research journey. Academic resource persons guided the students through critical phases of project writing, including:

Strategic topic selection and proposal development

Conducting a thorough literature review

Ethical data collection and analysis

Mastering standard referencing techniques and avoiding plagiarism

Lecturers at the event emphasized that undergraduate research is not merely a graduation requirement but an exercise in critical thinking and intellectual curiosity. They urged students to prioritize originality, adhere strictly to academic standards, and maintain consistent, open communication with their assigned supervisors to navigate common research hurdles seamlessly.

The interactive nature of the seminar allowed students to openly share their anxieties regarding project writing and receive direct, practical solutions from experienced faculty members.

Participants described the session as timely and highly impactful, noting that the practical insights shared have effectively stripped away the anxiety often associated with final-year research projects.

Through initiatives like this, the Department of History and International Studies continues to reinforce its commitment to producing well-equipped, research-ready graduates.

Feeding the nation, empowering the youth: Highlights from the 7th graduation ceremony of Mary Agro Farm Institute

Agriculture has been reaffirmed as the ultimate lifeline of human existence and a critical driver for national growth. The Auxiliary Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Enugu, Most Rev. Dr. Ernest Obodo made this submission during the 7th graduation ceremony of the Mary Agro Farm Institute, an affiliate of Godfrey Okoye University, held at the institute's premises in Udi, Enugu State.

Bishop Obodo noted that a nation like Nigeria blessed with an abundance of fertile land and a vibrant youth population has no business neglecting the agricultural sector. He emphasized that farming should be championed as a primary avenue for youth engagement and economic empowerment.

Through the Mary Agro Farm Institute, the Church is directly tackling unemployment by providing a comprehensive, six-month intensive agricultural training program. To ensure the 27 newly minted graduates transition seamlessly into the industry, Bishop Obodo revealed that each beneficiary receives a startup grant of five hundred thousand naira (N500,000) to launch their agribusiness ventures.

Echoing the call for excellence, the Vice-Chancellor of Godfrey Okoye University, Rev. Fr. Prof. Christian Anieke reminded the graduates that skills mean very little without strong character and financial discipline. He urged them to manage their startup funds prudently to build sustainable enterprises.

In a practical demonstration of support, Fr. Prof. Anieke, on behalf of the university, handed out cash prizes to outstanding graduates. The award for Best in Character pulled N150,000, while the Best Graduating Student in Academics and the Most Dedicated Graduand each received N100,000. Adding to the excitement, the Vice-Chancellor promised immediate employment opportunities at Godfrey Okoye University for select exceptional graduates.

Speaking on behalf of his peers, one of the trainees, Prince Kennedy Chukwumaeze, described the six-month training as an invaluable experience that has completely rewired their approach to farming. He expressed deep gratitude for the empowerment and challenged other Nigerian youths to look toward agriculture as a proud and dependable pathway to self-reliance.

Congratulations to the Graduands.

Official award ceremony for the maiden NUC Debate Championship winners: Honouring the debaters who conquered 74 universities across Nigeria.

The atmosphere at the Peter Mbah Law Auditorium was electric yesterday as the management and staff of Godfrey Okoye University gathered to celebrate a historic double triumph.

During the university’s midday prayer, a special award ceremony was held to honour Egbogu Favour Ogechukwu and Ajoiyi Kosisochukwu for their extraordinary victory in the maiden National Universities Debating Championship. The event also served as a proud home-coming for Miss Regina Ugonwa Obynna, a distinguished alumna who recently achieved a First Class at the Nigerian Law School, further cementing the university's reputation for producing top-tier legal minds.

Representing the National Universities Commission (NUC) and Royal Rhetorics, Mr. Stanley Nwaemerie provided a staggering perspective on the scale of the victory. The championship, a joint initiative by the NUC, NYSC, and the Committee of Vice-Chancellors, saw seventy-four universities and 219 debate teams compete from across Nigeria with GOUNI emerging champions and finals best speaker. Mr. Nwaemerie lauded Favour and Kosisochukwu for their courage and eloquence, noting that their journey to the top involved defeating established champions like the University of Ilorin and Obafemi Awolowo University.

To kick off the rewards, he presented the duo with a cash prize of ₦250,000 on behalf of the organizers, describing the university as a visionary hub for nurturing future leaders.

The Vice-Chancellor, Rev. Fr. Prof. Christian Anieke expressed immense pride in the students for bringing national honour to the institution. In a powerful move to recognize excellence, he presented an additional ₦500,000 to the debate champions, ₦200,000 to the Law School First Class graduate, and ₦100,000 to the Director of Competitions, Mrs. Uchanta Chukwu.

Prof. Anieke emphasized that the success of Miss Regina Obynna, who earned a 2:1 at GOUNI before bagging her First Class at Law School, is a testament to the high academic bar set at the university. He noted with pride that every Law School set from Godfrey Okoye University consistently produces First Class graduates, a trend the university is determined to maintain through strict discipline and academic rigour.

The ceremony concluded with heartfelt gratitude from the award recipients, who credited God,the Vice-Chancellor, and the unwavering mentorship of the Directorate of Competitions for their success.

With additional monetary gifts from Umuchinemere MFB and friends of the university, a celebratory cake-cutting, and goodwill messages from the Dean of the Faculty of Law, Prof. Frank Asogwa and the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Prof. Sergius Udeh, the event was a vivid reminder of the culture of excellence at Godfrey Okoye University.
