In the past, you could pursue a master’s degree or PhD at any university, whether state or federal and TETFund would sponsor it.
Recently, however, TETFund (under its Academic Staff Training and Development local component) streamlined a list of “tenable universities” across the six geopolitical zones where sponsored postgraduate training is now permitted. If you obtain admission for a master’s degree or PhD outside these universities, TETFund will no longer provide sponsorship.
Below are the designated universities:
— NORTH EAST
1. University of Maiduguri
2. Modibbo Adama University, Yola
3. Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi
— NORTH WEST
1. Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria
2. Bayero University, Kano
3. Usman Danfodio University, Sokoto
— NORTH CENTRAL
1. University of Ilorin
2. University of Jos
3. Federal University of Technology, Minna
— SOUTH EAST
1. University of Nigeria, Nsukka
2. Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka
3. Federal University of Technology, Owerri
— SOUTH SOUTH
1. University of Benin
2. University of Port Harcourt
3. University of Calabar
— SOUTH WEST
1. University of Lagos
2. University of Ibadan
3. Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife
A few private universities were also listed by TETFund.
These universities were selected because they are considered “centres of excellence” for postgraduate training.
The choice was based on strong postgraduate capacity, research output, and the availability of facilities and supervisors.
