*OKPEBHOLO’S ANTI-CRIME DRIVE GAINS MOMENTUM AS EDO APPROVES SPECIAL COURT FOR KIDNAPPING, CULTISM CASES*
The Edo State Government has recorded another major breakthrough in its campaign against kidnapping and cultism following the approval of a Special Criminal Court by the Chief Judge of Edo State, Justice Daniel Okungbowa. The development is expected to strengthen the state’s criminal justice system by ensuring the speedy prosecution of suspects charged with the two offences.
The establishment of the court followed a formal request by the Edo State Government to the Chief Judge on June 19, 2026. The request, signed by Governor Monday Okpebholo, sought the creation of a dedicated court to expedite the trial of kidnapping and cultism cases as part of broader efforts to tackle insecurity across the state.
According to the approval, the new court, to be known as Special Criminal Court 1, will commence operations on July 1, 2026. The court will sit in Benin City, the Edo State capital
