The North East Arid Zone Development Programme (NEAZDP) is pleased to initiate collaboration with the Centre for Environmental and Geographical Research Excellence (CEGRE), Yobe State University, toward organizing a sensitization workshop on environmental challenges affecting Yobe State.

This partnership is aimed at strengthening environmental awareness, promoting stakeholder engagement, and encouraging collective responsibility toward sustainable environmental management and resilience across communities in the state.

The proposed workshop will bring together key stakeholders from government institutions, academia, civil society organizations, development partners, and local communities to foster dialogue, knowledge sharing, and practical solutions for environmental sustainability in the North East Arid Zone.

Together, we can build a more resilient and environmentally sustainable future for our communities.

The Centre for Environmental and Geographical Research (CEGRE), Yobe State University, Nigeria, is firmly committed to building strong and mutually beneficial collaborations with local, national, and international partners. Importantly, the Centre is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities and modern geospatial laboratories that support cutting-edge research, advanced data analysis, and high-quality professional training. These facilities enable the delivery of hands-on training programmes, postgraduate research, and applied technical services aligned with international best practices.

The Centre actively seeks partnerships with universities, research institutions, development agencies, NGOs, government bodies, and the private sector for joint research, grant development, co-publications, postgraduate training, staff and student exchanges, and policy advisory support. With a forward-looking vision, CEGRE is positioning itself as a regional hub for climate, environment, and geo-health research in Northern Nigeria and the Sahel, and remains fully determined to collaborate in delivering impactful, scalable, and evidence-driven solutions.

The Centre for Environmental and Geographical Research (CEGRE-YSU) and the Department of Geography and Environmental Management, Yobe State University, were pleased to host the SIDPIN Project Team yesterday as part of collaborative efforts to support Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and host communities in Yobe State.

The discussion focused on advancing partnership in geo-spatial mapping, environmental health and resilience research, as well as capacity-building initiatives for improved community recovery and sustainable development outcomes.

CEGRE and the Department reaffirm their commitment to working closely with SIDPIN to foster impactful interventions that enhance dignity, inclusion, and wellbeing among displaced populations across the region.

RMRDC Seeks Strategic Partnership with CEGRE-YSU to Unlock Yobe’s Raw Material Potentials

The Raw Materials Research and Development Council (RMRDC) has expressed its readiness to collaborate with the Centre for Environmental and Geographical Research (CEGRE), Yobe State University, in a renewed effort to explore and harness the raw material potentials across Yobe State.

This was revealed during a courtesy visit by the State Director of RMRDC and his delegation to the Centre, where discussions were held on the need for a joint research framework to identify, document, and sustainably utilize the State’s abundant but largely untapped mineral resources.

In his remarks, the RMRDC State Director commended the technical capacity and research contributions of CEGRE, describing the Centre as a critical partner in the Council’s mission to support Nigeria’s industrial development through resource-based research. He emphasized the urgency of mapping raw materials such as Trona, among other industrial minerals, which hold economic and strategic importance.

Receiving the delegation, the leadership of CEGRE reaffirmed the Centre’s commitment to fostering applied research and policy-relevant studies that can support the sustainable utilization of local resources. The Centre also assured the Council of its willingness to deploy advanced geospatial tools and multidisciplinary expertise to support the exploration initiative.

The visit signals the beginning of a mutually beneficial partnership aimed at promoting evidence-based resource management and contributing to the broader goals of economic diversification and environmental sustainability in the region.

Modibbo Babagana Kyari – Professional Biography
The newly appointed Project Officer Climate Change Adaptation, Restoration and Mitigation at YOCCCER

Modibbo Babagana Kyari is a geographer and Geographic Information System (GIS) specialist with a deep commitment to environmental research. Currently serving as a Lecturer I and GIS Manager in the Department of Geography at Yobe State University (YSU), he also holds the role of Deputy Director at the Centre for Environmental and Geographical Research (CEGRE) at YSU. In this capacity, Modibbo leads interdisciplinary research and training to address pressing environmental and geographical issues.

Babagana-Kyari earned his MSc degree in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) with merit from the University of Portsmouth, United Kingdom (2015–2016), following his Bachelor’s degree in Geography (2:1) from the University of Maiduguri (2006–2011). He is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Environmental Health, specializing in Environmental Epidemiology, at Maryam Abacha American University of Niger (MAAUN), a journey he began in 2021.

His primary research interests focus on environmental risks and human security. His work encompasses projects investigating urban land-use dynamics, environmental risk assessment, geo-health, and the application of GIS for sustainable development.

In 2021, Mr. Modibbo was deployed to the Yobe State Geographic Information Service (YOGIS) by the Yobe State Government to serve as a GIS Expert for the DLI 11.3 project, a World Bank initiative through which the state secured a $2.5 million stretch-target grant. He also played a pivotal role in externally funded projects, including those under the World Bank's Multi-Sectoral Crisis Recovery Project (MCRP/PROLAC) via the North East Development Commission (NEDC), a research project exploring farmer-herder interdependency and natural resource utilization in the Lake Chad region.

Modibbo Babagana-Kyari is a member of the Nigerian Environmental Society (NES), the Association of Nigerian Geographers (ANG), and the United States Geospatial Intelligence Foundation (USGIF). He also served as Secretary for the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), YSU branch, in 2018, demonstrating his commitment to advancing academia and research.

Babagana-Kyari is a prolific academic with numerous publications in national and international peer-reviewed journals. Among his recent research outputs is a study from his Ph.D. research, published in October 2024, which examines the nexus between water risk factors and CKD incidences in Northern Yobe using a GIS approach. Another notable research article, titled "The Thin Line Between Climate Change Believers, Climate Change Skeptics, and Climate Change Dismissives," highlights his diverse scholarly contributions.

Through his research, teaching, and leadership, Modibbo Babagana-Kyari has emerged as a leading figure in applying GIS and environmental systems analysis techniques to address pressing real-world challenges, such as climate risk.
