The Discovery of Dufuna Canoe
Deep in the sands of Dufuna village, Yobe State, a Fulani herdsman named Mal Ya’u made a discovery that would rewrite African history. Hidden beneath the soil was the Dufuna Canoe, later excavated in 1992 and transported to Damaturu, the Yobe State capital.
Scientists dated the canoe to be 8,000 to 8,500 years old, making it the oldest boat in Africa and the third oldest in the world a symbol of Africa’s early innovation and civilization.
This ancient canoe tells a powerful story of human creativity, resilience, and the deep roots of African heritage.
