✶ ✶ ✶ How to proof read and edit your dissertation ✶ ✶ ✶
Even though the hard part is already done, proof reading and editing a dissertation before submission can feel like a very laborious and difficult task for students. This is understandable, as the last thing you want to do after spending months slaving away at writing your dissertation is to then spend hours upon hours reading it over trying to correct every tiny error. However, proof reading and editing your dissertation is a very important step – the grade you receive will only be as good as the standard of your writing. Leave yourself enough time
The most important part of accurately proof reading and editing your dissertation is to allow yourself enough time. When it comes to writing a long dissertation, students will often fall into the trap of not managing their time properly and rushing to finish the dissertation and writing up until the last minute. This is a big no-no, because proof reading and editing a dissertation is not something that can be done in 5 minutes. So leave yourself at least a few days (ideally a week) which you can dedicate to just going over and proofing your work – the more time you give yourself the more efficient and effective you will be.
Take breaks
Students are always told of the benefits of taking breaks when writing their assignments, but this is even more crucial when proof reading, especially if you’re reading thousands of words at a time. The longer you spend reading the more likely you are to miss errors, so make sure you keep a clear head by taking frequent breaks - ideally every half hour or hour – and eating and drinking the right stuff (avoid too much caffeine!). Reading your laptop for hours non-stop will also put strain on your eyes which will make it more difficult to stay focused and spot small errors, so try to give your eyes a break every now and again.
Consult Google
If you did a survey, most students would claim they know how to properly use a comma, but you’d be surprised at how many problems such supposedly simple punctuation can bring up. This is nothing to be ashamed of, as written English is a tricky thing to master. However, you also can’t make too many excuses, due to the ease at which the internet allows students to check their grammar and punctuation. A quick Google search can give you answers to pretty much all grammatical and punctuation related problems. So if in doubt, Google – even if you’re sure it’s something you should have mastered in secondary school!
Get a second pair of eyes
One of the best things you can do to help reduce grammatical errors in your dissertation is to get someone else to have a read through and pick out any errors. This can be anyone from your family, friends or course mates – they don’t have to be experts in your field. Even if you have impeccable English, it’s almost impossible to spot every single tiny mistake, particularly if you’ve written a long dissertation, so getting a fresh pair of eyes to go over will help get rid of those tricky little errors.
Remember spellchecker isn’t perfect
Most students will be writing their assignments on Word and relying on its spellchecker to highlight any spelling and grammatical errors. Whilst this is an excellent and helpful tool, you need to remember it’s not 100% accurate – chances are at some point in your dissertation it will either miss an error or say that something which is actually correct is a mistake. So if you think you know better, make sure you double check so that you can avoid spellchecker letting you down. Also make sure your spellcheck is set to the correct settings, as having it set to American spelling means Word will miss things that could lose you marks at UK universities.
