Calabar Literary Society

is not limited to:

1. Promoting literary and other creative art in Calabar, Nigeria, and the rest of Africa.

2. Providing a fertile forum for the interaction of literary and other creative minds

3. Providing a unique platform for persons with a passion for literary and other creative art to hone their talents and skills through constructive criticisms and incisive reviews.

4. Providing an outlet for the exhibition of the literary and other creative works of members of the society; promoting the recognition of such works globally.

5. Encouraging the younger generation to express their creativity and creations in the literary and other art through school-based development and mentorship programs, inter- school competitions and other reward-based creative engagements.

6. Promoting and preserving the culture of reading and writing in Calabar and the furthest reaches of Africa. CELLS OF THE CALABAR LITERARY SOCIETY

1. POETRY CAFÈ – An avenue for poets to mingle creatively once a month.

2. JAMES ENE HENSHAW THEATRE: A media floor open to playwrights within and abroad the Literary Society to display their creative ideas. The theatre house meets monthly to perform new works of drama as well as previously dramatized works.

3. The Young Writers Club – a project aimed at stimulating young writers within our community by acknowledging young writers discovered during our yearly literary outreaches.

4. Book club – a project aimed at stimulating the reading culture while challenging and rewarding readers. Literary Readings: This holds once a month during which new works of literature are brought to light, appreciated and criticized constructively.

2. Literary outreaches – a project aimed at developing the talents and skills of literary and other creative artists in primary and secondary schools within Cross River State.

3. CLS Open Day (October 12 of every year) This usually marks the end of the Literary year. It is a date set aside for exhibition of works discovered and published during the Literary year. Members who have distinguished themselves in the Literary world Nationally and Internationally are recognised and celebrated on this day.

4. A One Day One Night: with a Nigerian Literary Icon who would have an interactive creative session with nembers of the CLS. LITERARY CALENDAR OF CLS

The calendar of the CLS runs all year round and activities are featured in three (3) distinctive seasons viz:

HARMATTAN SEASON: NOVEMBER-FEBRUARY

RAINY SEASON: MARCH - JUNE

DRY SEASON: JULY - OCTOBER
