EJAGHAM/ EFUT AND ABAKPA CULTURAL GROUP

The Ejagham Nation spreads across parts of Cross River in Nigeria Cameroon in Central Africa. They speak Ejagham language, an off shoot of the Bantu Race and tongue. They share a homogenous culture across borders and maintain practical similarities in terms of social structures and institutions. Notable among such institutions is the ‘Nkim’ tradition.

These similarities are commonly found among the Quas, Efut, Akamkpa, Odukpani and Biase areas of the Southern Senatorial district of Cross River. They are also in Ikom, Etung and Boki Communities in Central Senatorial District of Cross River, parts of Ogoja in the Northern Senatorial District, as well as the Ekok, Mfum, Eyimojok and Nsangharati areas of Cameroon.

These similarities include but are not limited to vegetation, agricultural practices, world view, politics, science and art. One of the most dominant Art forms being the ‘Moni-Nkim’ tradition and dance. The Nkim Tradition is an institution for the’’ Coming of age’’ for Ejagham maidens, while the dance is the ‘’Outing ceremony’’ to signify the successful orientation into womanhood and possible motherhood.
