“When Poverty Touches the Mind”
I grew up hearing elders say that poverty wears many faces. Some spoke of poverty of the stomach, others of the pocket, and some even of the home. But it took years—decades, even—before I understood the most dangerous form of poverty: the poverty of the mind.
My journey through our communities, villages, and towns exposed me to truths that are rarely spoken but deeply felt. I have sat with mothers who hide their tears behind forced smiles, fathers who carry the weight of entire households in silence, and youths whose talents shine bright but are dimmed by circumstances beyond their control. It was these encounters that shaped the prayer that now rests permanently in my heart.
I remember one afternoon vividly. I had gone to visit a small settlement that had been struggling for years. The sun was fierce, the air heavy, and the people moved with the slow endurance of those accustomed to hardship. Among them was a young man named Kabiru. Once, he had been one of the most promising minds in his school—sharp, outspoken, and driven by truth. Yet on that day, I saw in his eyes a kind of resignation that troubled me deeply.
He approached me with a half-smile and said, “Alhaji, hunger is powerful. It can make a man say what he does not believe, and follow a path he knows is wrong.”
His words stayed with me long after I left that community. They were not just his truth; they were the truth of many. For when poverty tightens its grip, it does not simply empty the pockets—it bends the spine, clouds the judgment, and in its most dangerous form, convinces a person to fight against the truth just to survive.
That was the day I began to pray differently.
I prayed that Allah would protect our youths from the kind of poverty that steals clarity and courage. I prayed that He would shield them from the desperation that forces them to compromise their values. And I prayed that He would enrich their minds with the dignity, wisdom, and opportunities they deserve.
Over the years, this prayer became a constant companion. I whispered it during community visits, political meetings, and quiet moments at home. I carried it

A man doesn't die in death,
he dies when he is forgotten.
For the last breath isn't the end of life,
the end of life is the end of memory.
When your name is last spoken, when your deeds are last spread.
And so,
may we live past the end,
may our last words live longer than we ever get to know, may our last breath
do not get in death, and do not end in vain.
A MOST READ PIECE.
Before worrying about what you ‘ve lost, take a moment to appreciate what you still have.
The hard mattress in your home is better than hospital bed
A tight budget is better than struggling to breathe
Know this my dear brother: Wealth is the most lowest form of sustenance. The greatest blessing is health and well-being.
If you ever doubt how temporary this world is, just think about this
If you had severe headache for just five minutes, you would be willing to give up everything just to feel normal again.
So my dear brother, if you can sleep without needing painkillers, wake up without aches, relieve yourself in privacy, and walk on your own two feet. If you can do these things by Allah’s mercy- then you are more rich than a king.
Do you know who the real king is?
The real king is the one who has a roof over his head, a spouse who is pleased with him and enough sustenance for the day.
