Digital skills are not something we learn once and stop. Technology keeps changing, and teachers need opportunities to keep learning, adapting and growing.
Meet Shafiu Usman, a visually impaired teacher and Assistive Technology Instructor at the Special Education Centre, Bauchi.
Shafiu teaches visually impaired students how to use computers and assistive technologies to support their learning and independence.
He is also one of the 50 teachers selected for the DIGI-TEACH BAUCHI programme.
Shafiu’s digital journey is not starting from zero. He previously received digital skills training in 2025, including training in essential computer operations. But as technology continues to evolve, there are new tools and skills he wants to explore and bring into his teaching practice.
Through DIGI-TEACH BAUCHI, Shafiu is looking forward to strengthening his knowledge of Google Docs, Google Forms, digital assessments, Artificial Intelligence, digital literacy and online safety.
What makes his journey particularly meaningful is the opportunity to take these skills beyond himself.
The visually impaired students he teaches have not previously received formal training in digital literacy and online safety. By strengthening his own capacity, Shafiu will be better positioned to introduce his learners to these important skills and help them navigate technology more confidently and safely.
A teacher learns. A teacher shares. More learners benefit.
This is the teacher multiplier approach at the heart of DIGI-TEACH BAUCHI.
And Shafiu’s story reminds us that digital inclusion is not simply about access to devices. It is about creating opportunities for teachers and learners with disabilities to learn, adapt and participate meaningfully in the digital world.
Watch Shafiu’s story and hear directly from him about his digital journey, the challenges he faces, and what he hopes to learn through DIGI-TEACH BAUCHI.
