COMMISSIONER COMMEMORATES INTERNATIONAL DAY OF EDUCATION
.. REELS OUT GOVERNMENT COMPLIMENTARY EFFORTS*
Lagos State Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Mr. Jamiu Alli-Balogun, today, commemorates the year 2026 International Day of Education, themed, "The Power of Youth in Co-creating Education", highlighting the State's commitment to sustainable reforms and improved learning outcomes.
In his address on Saturday, Alli-Balogun outlined key initiatives, highlighting the State Government's prioritization of quality, accessibility, inclusiveness and safe education, aligning with SDG 4 and the T.H.E.M.E.S + Agenda of Mr. Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-olu's administration.
"Our programmes reflect a State-wide, comprehensive investment in expanding access, improving quality, and modernizing public education infrastructure", he said.
Alli-Balogun outlined key initiatives, including capacity-building workshops, construction of new classroom blocks, and rehabilitation of several others, commissioning of ultra-modern classroom projects in various locations across the State, payment of the West Africa Examinations Council (WAEC) fees, a game- changer for students and expansion of digital learning through programmes like EKO EXCEL, the Eko Learner's Support programme, etc
The Commissioner noted that sustainable policies and frameworks have been put in place to support learners with disabilities and vulnerable groups, with the expansion of scholarships and inclusion support for students with disabilities, ensuring they have equal access to Education. He added that the State Government has upgraded and renovated Inclusive School infrastructure to reduce learning barriers and create more access for students with disabilities.
In our effort towards providing a safe learning environment for students, the Babajide Olusola administration has implemented various measures, including child protection policies, safeguarding training, and advocacy against abuse, exploitation, and violence.
Schools are also conducting regular safety awareness programmes, fire drills, and enforcing laboratory regulations to minimize risks, he enthused.
The Commissioner noted that the State Government has enhanced planning and safety monitoring through a unified academic calendar, while fostering a safe school culture that prioritizes risk prevention, learner protection, and overall wellbeing.
He also noted that the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education remains committed to sustainable reforms, enduring achievements, and efforts aimed at improving learning outcomes across public schools in Lagos State
Mr. Alli-Balogun wishes all learners a happy International Day of Education on behalf of the Lagos State Government.
The International Day of Education was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly on 24th January to celebrate the role of Education for peace and development, based on four pillars - learning to know; learning g to do; learning to live together and learning to be.

Mrs. Oyedeji Habibat Folashade is a teacher by profession, a preacher by calling, and a mentor by passionβa woman who has spent decades shaping lives with unwavering dedication. Whether in the classroom or the church, her impact is undeniable.
Born into the esteemed Quadri family of Isale-Eko, Lagos State, she carries a legacy of excellence. She earned an HND in Science Technology (Biology/Microbiology) from The Federal Polytechnic, Bauchi, followed by a Postgraduate Diploma in Education at Ekiti State University. But for her, education goes beyond knowledgeβitβs about transformation.
As a Chief Technical Instructor and School Counsellor at Government Junior College, Ajara, Badagry, she is more than an educatorβshe is a builder of destinies. Her dedication has earned her numerous awards and recognitions, including:
