August 20 is the Feast of St Bernard of Clairvaux, a man honored as "Mellifluous Doctor," because of the sweetness of his preaching. His love for austerity and strict penance drew him to the Cistercian Order where he became a monk, and afterwards became the Abbot (head of monks) in the monastery of Clairvaux. The secrets to the life long success in preaching were the Virgin Mary, penance and recollection with zeal for salvation of souls. His special love for Our Lady remains outstanding in narration, such that his famous prayer, Memorare, changed a man from despair to great hope. That man is another Doctor of the Church we know as St Francis De Sales, his compatriot. Bernard's writings attracted many Marian devotees even after his era, notable among such is St Alphonsus Liguori who quotes him mercilessly in his own writings. The simple thing we learn from Bernard is total confidence in the prayers of Mary. Pray every day his Memorare with attention, and be touched! O Mellifluous Bernu, help us!
