4. Do Not Forget the G Factor: The G factor here is GOD. You cannot be prepared to the extent that God is no longer relevant. There are things beyond human control. What if you happen to break down with fever on the day of your examination? What after writing well and you never get to see your result for no sensible reason? This is where you need God to work for you. This explains the importance of prayer. Prayer does not only change things, it positions you to confront all things.

3. Forget about “JAMB Runs”: If you start now to nurse the idea of getting help from somewhere else outside your brain, you may end up with stories that touch.

There are many “JAMB Messiahs” (That’s what they claim) everywhere trying to take advantage of gullible candidates. I know they will eventually convince many lazy students. But let it not be you. Their offer may seem juicy but then so is every short cut to success. It will only leave you with tales of woes at the end of the day. With the current mode of examination and some other changes JAMB has made, the possibility of succeeding with EXPO has been drastically reduced. So get that option off your mind and take the surest pathway to success which remains hard work, discipline and determination.

2. Be Confident: Your level of intelligence is affected by the state of your mind. Examination fear and intimidation has a way of sapping confidence from you. Even if you were not able to cover the whole syllables, be confident in the areas you have covered. Don’t try to copy others. Find out what works for you and stick to it since all of us are not gifted same way. E.g you need to know the reading environment that works for you and the time of the day you are most productive.

If you are a social learner for instance, you can join JAMB coaching classes and JAMB examination forums and groups where you can share ideas and learn from others. Never the less, this should not replace your personal study time.

While studying, read between the lines and make sure you know the exact meaning of words you come across. Don’t assume you know the meaning already. This is very important in tackling questions in English language and subjects like biology. Remember JAMB can be tricky with questions.

Also work on your speed and accuracy because it’s a test of both. There’s no point knowing all the answers but not being able to finish within the specified time.

The 2016 UTME Registration has been extended to January 31st 2016.

However, we believe that a great number of candidates are already registered for 2016 UTME.

We therefore want to share some tips that will enable you prepare adequately and scale through successfully in 2016 UTME.

What it takes to prepare for JAMB UTME is really no different from what it takes to prepare for any other exam. By that I mean the ground rule is the same. That is; work hard on your books.

However, I have outlined here specific nuggets for strategic and adequate preparation;

1. Start Preparing Now!: Don’t wait until weeks to the exam to start studying. The first step to success in any examination is to start preparing on time. Begin by creating a personal time-table; the one that suits your study time (day or night).
Also make sure you use the JAMB syllabus. It helps you not only to know the list of topics to be covered but also the areas questions will likely come from.

We have emphasized over and over again on the importance of JAMB past questions.

UNIBEN to increase admission quota into medical school

If the plans by the management of University of Benin (UNIBEN) see the light of the day, candidates seeking admission into the university to study Medicine and Surgery, and their parents, will soon have every cause to smile. The cheering news was broken by the university authority, which said strategies had put in place to ensure the upward review of the admission quota into the medical programmes in order to avail applicants greater opportunities for admission.

The plan was followed last week with a visit and inspection of facilities at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) by the Vice-Chancellor Prof. Faraday Orumwense. The vice-chancellor was received at UBTH by the Dean of College of Medicine, Prof. Moses Mommoh; Prof Ambrose Isah, a Professor of Medicine and the President of UNIBEN Medical Students Association, Niyi Kolade, as well as Heads of Departments, who conducted him round facilities.

The facility tour was said to have begun at the Oba Akenzuwa Hall, the lecture halls for the 400-Level Medical students, where the vice-chancellor interacted with the students and encouraged them to work hard and apply themselves to effective learning in order to become competent doctors.

Meanwhile, he counseled them to desist from absenting themselves from their clinical postings, advising them to also make good use of the facilities in the hospital for their learning. The vice-chancellor and his team inspected the offices and seminar rooms at the Department of Medicine, Surgery, Medical Library, the Consultants Out- Patients Department (COPD) and the Institute of Child Health. Apart from these, Orumwense was also conducted round the Morbid Anatomy Laboratory, Blood Bank, Operating Theatre, Histopathology Laboratory, Child Health Department and the Accident and Emergency Centres.

Speaking at the end of the tour, the vice-chancellor said he was impressed at the level of infrastructural development at the Teaching Hospital, even as he commended the Chief Medical Director (CMD), Prof. Micheal Ibadin for showing a purposeful management. While lauding the members of staff of the hospital for their commitment over the years towards grooming the medical students, Orumwense revealed that the proposed increase in admission quota has become necessary, considering the fact that UNIBEN has become the most sought after medical school in the country.

His words: “Our admission policy of “Strictly Merit” has made us the most sought after. Every parent wants their children to become doctors and every student wants to come to UNIBEN. “Yearly, we are in a state of dilemma when it comes to offer candidates admission to medicine. Many candidates applied and passed the qualifying examination, but we stick to our policy of merit and admit the best 100 students.

This has really not been easy. With an increase in the admission quota, more students will be given the opportunity of actualizing their dreams of becoming medical doctors and studying at the university.” According to Mommoh, the current doctor-patient ratio in the country is a far cry from the World Health Organization (WHO) recommendation.

He said: “There is need to increase the number of doctors in the country, though Nigeria has trained many doctors, and most of them have left the shores of the country looking for greener pasture. However, UBTH has become a first choice teaching hospital in the country, where we have all specialties in medical practices and specialties in Neurosurgery, Plastic Surgery, Fetal Medicine while we pioneered Stem Cell Transplant for Sickle Cell Anaemia patients.”
