MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS IN THE TEACHING PROFESSION

Mental health awareness is an important part of the teaching profession.

Teachers play a vital role in shaping the minds, confidence, and future of learners, but they also need care and support for their own mental well-being.

Teaching can be rewarding, but it can also come with pressure, heavy workloads, classroom challenges, and emotional demands.

Taking care of our mental health means recognizing our emotions, managing stress, maintaining healthy relationships, and seeking support when needed.

As educators, let us create safe and supportive classrooms where learners feel comfortable expressing their feelings without fear of judgment. At the same time, teachers should also feel encouraged to speak openly about their own challenges and seek help when necessary.

A healthy teacher creates a healthier Classroom.

Let us take care of our minds, check on our colleagues and learners, speak up when we need support, and promote a culture where seeking help is seen as a sign of strength, not weakness.

Take care of your mind. Support your colleagues. Listen to your learners.

Together, let us build a healthier and more supportive education system.

EDO SUBEB, SOS CHILDREN'S VILLAGE TRAIN SAFEGUARDING TEACHERS ON MENTAL HEALTH AND PSYCHOSOCIAL SUPPORT

The Edo State Universal Basic Education Board (Edo SUBEB), in collaboration with SOS Children’s Village, is conducting a three-day training for selected safeguarding teachers in Oredo LGA on Mental Health and Psychosocial Support.

The training, holding from 19th to 21st August 2026, is designed to equip teachers with the knowledge and skills to better support the emotional and psychological wellbeing of children.

Participants are learning about mental health awareness, stress management, empathy, active listening, and early identification of signs of emotional distress, including anxiety, grief, bullying and family-related challenges.

The programme also emphasises the important role of safeguarding teachers in creating safe, supportive and child-friendly school environments, while ensuring that children who need specialised support are referred to the appropriate professionals.

This initiative reflects the shared commitment of Edo SUBEB and SOS Children’s Village, an NGO established with the support of the European Union, to strengthening child protection and promoting the wellbeing of every child.

WHEN HOUSE SAFE, COMMUNITY GO STRONG.

EDO SUBEB REINFORCES QUALITY EDUCATION THROUGH TRAINING ON COMMUNITY MAPPING/SURVEY OF OUT-OF-DOOR CHILDREN (OOSC) ACROSS EDO STATE.

In collaboration with the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), the Edo State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) successfully organized a training programme for Social Mobilization Officers (SMOs) and Head of Session (HOSes) to strengthen the implementation of the Community Mapping and Survey of Out-of-School Children exercise across the state.

The training equipped participants with the knowledge and practical skills required to accurately identify, enumerate and document out-of-school children within their communities. Sessions also emphasized ethical data collection, effective community engagement, quality assurance and the importance of reliable data in supporting evidence-based educational planning and targeted interventions.

Participants were reminded that every child identified represents an opportunity to reconnect a learner with quality basic education. The exercise is expected to provide the data needed to improve school enrolment, support re-entry programmes and guide policies that promote equitable access to education.

Through this initiative, Edo SUBEB and UBEC reaffirm their commitment to ensuring that every eligible child is counted, every community is reached, and no child is left behind in the pursuit of quality basic education for all.

Hon. Ebanehita Sonia Omonzane expressed profound appreciation to the Executive Governor of Edo State, Senator Monday Okpebholo, for his unwavering commitment to strengthening the education sector and advancing quality basic education across the state.

She also commended the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) for its sustained partnership and invaluable support in the implementation of impactful educational initiatives. According to her, the collaboration has significantly enhanced capacity within the education system while promoting inclusive, equitable and accessible quality basic education for every learner across Edo State.
