🎤 **THE SINGER AND HIS MINISTRY — CHAPTER 1**
Many people believe that once you dey sing for church, automatically you don become a minister.
Others feel say the moment microphone enter their hand and people begin shout, **“Power!”**, ministry don start.
But make we clear this thing from the beginning:
**MINISTRY IS DEEPER THAN PERFORMANCE.**
You fit get sweet voice.
You fit sabi runs.
You fit hit high notes wey make everybody turn their head.
You fit know harmony, riffs, dynamics and stagecraft.
But if you no understand **why you are singing**, you fit get the sound without understanding the assignment.
Before you learn how to sing better, answer one serious question:
👉🏽 **WHY DO I SING?**
Because if purpose no clear, your gift fit carry you go where God never send you.
Your purpose determines your direction.
When purpose is misunderstood, gifts are often misused.
But when purpose is understood, your gift becomes a powerful tool in the hands of God.
---
🔥 **SO, WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE A MINISTER?**
The word *minister* simply means **servant.**
To minister is to serve.
No be title.
No be who get the biggest microphone.
No be who people dey call, **“Our powerful worshipper.”**
No be who dey always stand in front.
**Ministry is service.**
A song minister is not just somebody wey sabi sing.
A song minister is a servant of God who uses music to communicate truth, inspire faith, encourage believers and glorify Jesus Christ.
**THE MICROPHONE IS A TOOL. IT IS NOT THE MINISTRY.**
The real ministry flows from the life behind the microphone.
And this one na where many singers miss am.
You fit dey sing on stage and still never dey minister.
You fit dey minister without anybody shouting your name.
---
💡 **POWERFUL TRUTH**
**Many people can sing. Few people can truly minister.**
The difference is not just vocal ability.
It is the condition of the heart.
A technically excellent singer can make people say:
**“Guy! You too sabi!”**
But a genuine minister can make somebody say:
**“Something about that song touched me.”**
Two singers can sing the same song.
Both sing in tune.
Both get strong voices.
Both understand harmony.
Both have stage presence.
Both know their stuff.
But after one finishes, everybody says:
**“This guy can sing!”**
After the other finishes, somebody is encouraged.
Somebody's faith is strengthened.
Somebody is challenged.
Somebody remembers God.
Somebody gets the courage to keep going.
**So what made the difference?**
It is not always technique.
Sometimes, na **the person behind the voice.**
God is not only interested in what you are doing.
He is also interested in **who you are becoming.**
---
⚠️ **DON'T CONFUSE VIBES WITH MINISTRY**
In Nigeria, we know how to catch vibes.
“Praise the Lord!”
**“HALLELUJAH!”**
Instrumentalists enter.
Lights come on.
Drummer increases the tempo.
Singer starts doing runs.
Everybody shouts.
The atmosphere is charged.
And we conclude:
**“POWERFUL MINISTRATION!”**
Not necessarily.
Something can sound powerful and still lack spiritual depth.
Don't let **goosebumps deceive you.**
Don't let people shouting your name become your evidence that God is pleased.
Don't let people dancing make you think you have fulfilled your assignment.
**Crowd response is not the same thing as God's approval.**
Learn the difference.
---
🎶 **WHAT IS A GOSPEL SONG?**
Today, plenty songs mention God, heaven, blessings, miracles and spirituality.
But because a song mentions “God” does not automatically make it gospel.
A gospel song is not defined by religious vocabulary.
It is defined by its **MESSAGE.**
The Gospel means **Good News.**
Jesus Christ came into the world.
He died for our sins.
He was buried.
He rose again.
He offers salvation to everyone who believes.
So don't just ask:
**“Does this song mention God?”**
Ask:
👉🏽 What exactly is this song communicating about God?
👉🏽 Does this song exalt Christ?
👉🏽 Does the message agree with Scripture?
Because no be every song wey get “Jesus” for the lyrics automatically get the Gospel inside am.
**CHECK THE MESSAGE, NOT JUST THE VOCABULARY.**
---
🔥 **CHARACTER BEFORE GIFTING**
Let's be honest.
**Talent fit open door. Character na wetin go keep you there.**
You can blow today and disappear tomorrow.
You can become the singer everybody wants to invite.
But if your character is not strong enough to carry your influence, the same platform that lifted you can expose you.
Don't be the person who is:
**“Holy Ghost on stage, Holy WhatsApp group after rehearsal.” 😂**
Don't build a powerful public ministry while your private life is falling apart.
God is interested in both.
Your voice can attract people.
**YOUR CHARACTER DETERMINES WHETHER THEY CAN TRUST YOU.**
---
🚨 **COMMON MISTAKES SINGERS MAKE**
**1️⃣ CONFUSING MINISTRY WITH PERFORMANCE**
You are more concerned about:
**“How did I sound?”**
than:
**“Did I serve?”**
There's nothing wrong with wanting to sing well.
Excellence matters.
But if your main motivation is:
**“Make them know say I sabi sing,”**
you may have already shifted the focus.
**2️⃣ DEPENDING ON TALENT ALONE**
Some singers have been gifted so much that they stopped developing.
“I can sing already.”
**My brother, no be so.**
The fact that you can sing does not mean you cannot improve.
**3️⃣ NEGLECTING YOUR WALK WITH GOD**
You can rehearse a song for three hours and spend three minutes with God.
You know every lyric.
Every harmony.
Every entrance.
But you no know the God you are singing about.
**That's dangerous.**
Don't prepare only the song.
**Prepare yourself.**
**4️⃣ ALLOWING MONEY TO CONTROL MINISTRY DECISIONS**
Money is important.
Transport costs money.
Equipment costs money.
Training costs money.
Musicians need to eat.
But money should not become your master.
Don't turn every ministry opportunity into:
**“How much are they paying?”**
And don't assume every free opportunity is worthless either.
Sometimes the opportunity is the seed.
Sometimes the payment is the blessing.
Sometimes the experience is the training.
**LEARN TO DISCERN.**
---
💎 **HOW DO YOU PLACE VALUE ON YOUR MINISTRY?**
**1️⃣ BE FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT**
No be only when you get ministration tomorrow that you suddenly start praying:
**“Father, use me.”**
Build your walk with God before the microphone comes on.
---
**2️⃣ BE DISTINCTIVE**
In a country where everybody dey try to sound like somebody else, learn to discover your own voice.
Today na one singer.
Tomorrow na another one.
Next week na another style.
Before you know am, you no even know your own sound again.
**Learn from people, but don't lose yourself.**
You don't have to be everywhere.
You don't have to accept every invitation.
Let God guide your opportunities and assignments.
---
**3️⃣ DON'T PUT A PRICE TAG ON YOURSELF**
This does not mean you should not charge for professional services.
It means **don't reduce your entire worth to money.**
There are times to charge.
There are times to volunteer.
There are times to negotiate.
There are times to walk away.
**Wisdom is knowing the difference.**
---
**4️⃣ MAINTAIN A GOOD REPUTATION**
In Nigeria, people talk.
And let's be honest:
**Na small world.**
The person you insult today may be the person somebody asks about you tomorrow.
The church you disappoint today may know the church inviting you next month.
The musician you treat badly today may become the Musical Director recommending singers tomorrow.
Your reputation travels faster than your CV.
So don't just ask:
**“Can I sing?”**
Ask:
**“Can people trust me?”**
Talent may make people notice you.
**CHARACTER MAKES PEOPLE RECOMMEND YOU.**
---
**5️⃣ INVEST IN TRAINING AND GROWTH**
Don't be that singer who says:
**“God gave me the voice, so I don't need training.”**
God gave you the voice.
**TRAINING TEACHES YOU HOW TO STEWARD IT.**
If your pitch is weak, train.
If your harmony is weak, train.
If your breathing is poor, train.
If you struggle with high notes, train.
If your stage confidence is poor, train.
If you don't understand music, study.
There is nothing spiritual about refusing to improve.
**EXCELLENCE IS NOT PRIDE.**
You can remain humble and still become better.
Keep learning.
Keep growing.
Keep serving.
Keep your heart right.
And above everything else:
**DON'T LET THE GIFT BECOME BIGGER THAN THE GIVER.**
---
🎯 **CHAPTER TAKEAWAY**
Before you ask:
**“How can I sing better?”**
Ask:
**“How can I serve better?”**
Before you ask:
**“How can I become famous?”**
Ask:
**“How can I become useful?”**
Before you ask:
**“How much will they pay me?”**
Ask:
**“What is God asking me to do?”**
Because at the end of the day...
**The goal is not just to be a singer people know.**
The goal is to become a singer **GOD CAN TRUST.**
