On Tuesday, Pastor Tunde Bakare, serving pastor of the Citadel Global Community Church, responded to critics of his state-of-the-nation address on Sunday by claiming he received zero votes in the primary election of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC because his true identity and original credentials were not properly verified.
He pleaded, "Can someone please tell these people that if you go into a primary election with your true identity and integrity still intact and your original credentials from reputable schools and you end up with zero votes:
Education at all levels (elementary, secondary, college, and university) both inside and outside of the country is a true mark of distinction, one that can never be called into question. Please use Michel de Montaigne's language to express this.
'emilokan,' a term associated with Tinubu and meaning "my turn" in Yoruba, was a popular topic of discussion after Bakare urged Nigerians to reject its proponents.
He continued, saying that no honest candidate for public office would avoid debates and would instead have his staff respond to voters' questions about him.
However, the All Progressives Congress' Presidential Campaign Council PCC quickly responded by calling Bakare a "political paperweight" whose words should not be taken seriously.
"Bakare got zero votes at the convention," said PCC Director of Special Media Projects/New Media Chief Femi Fani-Kayode.
Mr. Dele Alake, the PCC's Special Adviser for Media, Communications, and Public Affairs, also weighed in, calling the reverend a political novice.
Bakare defended himself by asking his detractors why they were even considering his arguments. Maybe they can't manage the "paper weight" if it's true.
Some losses can feel even more like a victory than others. One of the Special Advisers, who I initially believed to be honorable, resorted to lying to his boss. He claimed that I had filmed a video in which I urged churchgoers to vote for his opponent, then reversed course and urged them not to vote for him.
To my knowledge, there is no such video in which such untruths are presented. They are spreading an edited version of a sermon given at Citadel Global Community Church in 2020 with the title "An idle man's brain is the devil's workshop." In the video, I was very clear that I did not support their candidate's choices in terms of personal morals, professional ethics, or political philosophy.
I never once suggested that our members vote for or against any particular candidate in the aforementioned video. And just so you know, we don't have any zombies in our midst. By the grace of God, they can think for themselves, and on Election Day, they will choose who to vote for. We take great comfort in the fact that the Bible clearly lays out the ancestry and ultimate fate of those whose livelihood depends on spreading lies about others and distorting the truth about them. Psalm 58:3-8 applies. "The wicked are alienated from the womb; from the moment of birth they speak deceit."
You can rest assured that I will not be rattled by the vicious attacks of these political merchants because I am well aware of Voltaire's observation that "many are destined to reason wrongly, others not at all, and some to persecute those who do reason."
