4 Reasons Your Little One Knows the Sounds... But Still Can't Read

When your child or pupil seems to have mastered their letter sounds but is having trouble making the jump to reading, it can be frustrating for both of you. That's especially true when you're not sure why they're getting stuck. This post offers four checkpoints you can use to help your little one get moving again.

Many children know their sounds… but still cannot read words.

If this is your child, you are not alone.

Here are 4 common reasons why this happens:

1️⃣ They don’t fully know their letter sounds

Sometimes children memorize sounds in order (A, B, C…) but cannot recognize them randomly.

👉 If they truly know them, they should be able to say each sound quickly in any order.

2️⃣ They don’t know letter combinations yet

Reading goes beyond A–Z.

Children must also learn combinations like:

CH = /ch/

SH = /sh/

Magic “e” words like cake, time, cone

Without this, reading becomes difficult.

3️⃣ They cannot blend sounds

Reading requires combining sounds together.

Example: S - I - T → SIT

This skill must be taught step by step, starting with small 2-letter words.

4️⃣ They are guessing or memorizing words

Some children are taught to guess from pictures or memorize sight words.

But real reading is not guessing—it is blending letters into words.

Without blending skills, new words become difficult.

If your child is struggling, it is not because they are not intelligent.
