Uprooting Cultism in Nigerian
Institutions
Campus cults have become the most
potent cause of insecurity in the
institution of higher learning. It is
elevating the challenges facing the
average students to new and dangerous
levels.
Several reports showed that between
1997 to 2012 hundreds of students were
expelled or suspended from their
various institutions, while some were
arrested and detained by law
enforcement agencies and subsequently
charged and prosecuted.
However, there is no doubt that
institution such as Bayero University,
Kano, have uprooted this evil practice,
thereby encouraging more students to
enrol into the institution.
Cultism in Nigerian institutions plays a
major role in increasing the level of
thugs’ activities among Nigerian youths.
They damage public property
deliberately without any fear because
they believe that their association or
group will protect them from any
persecution that may befall them.
Strange marks in the body of student
also shows sign of membership of cults
association, therefore, parents should
take good care of their children.
A cultist shows no respect to constituted
authorities, because he always thinks
that he can overpower everybody, that’s
why you will see many people or
students doing what they like at any
place they like.
Students, who lack the confidence to
face the rigors and challenges of
academic work, seek refuge from cult
groups in order to obtain favourable
grades through intimidation and
blackmail of lecturers. These students
lack the belief in their own ability to do
things and be successful.
But some parents don’t give good
attention to their children. While their
children bring home with them bad
behaviours that the parents should
investigate, they just turn blind eyes to
them.
On the other hand, some parents are
working so hard to see that they
persuade their children to shun cultism
and violent acts in general. But since
most of the students that are studying
in tertiary institutions, most especially
universities, are staying in the campus,
they find it difficult to regulate the
behaviours of their children. Lack of
parental care and lack of monitoring
contribute immensely to the existence
of vices in the society.
The reasons behind the involvement of
some students into cult group are to
avoid harassment and intimidation by
other cultists and to be regarded as
super stars or high flyers. Male cultists
believe that no female student on
campus can resist or refuse their love
advances and some also erroneously
believe that they must pass their
examinations, whether they work hard
or not. Of course, others join cult
groups because they were officially
asked to leave the institution, after all
the sufferings they experienced and
hard work from primary school to the
higher institution.
Cultist families are always in state of
danger because at any time the member
of that group can be requested to
sacrifice one of his family members.
Moral education should begin at home.
In other words, the role of parents,
especially mothers, is crucial in the
proper upbringing of their children.
Some young people pick up bad habits
like smoking, alcohol consumption and
promiscuous life styles from home.
Children from broken homes are victims
or particularly vulnerable in matters of
this nature.
The primary and secondary schools the
boys and girls attend before they go to
the university have a role to play in
ordering the scale of presences of their
students, too. It is advisable for all
students, lecturers, parents and
government to join hands in fighting
this menace by working together to
bring up worthy and morally upright
children who would lead our country in
the future.

JAMB Online Admission Status
2014/2015
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation
Board JAMB has created an online
admission status checking link on her e-
Facilities portal. This will enable all
UTME and DE candidates, irrespective of
their school of choice, to keep in touch
and know when they are offered
provisional admission by their individual
choice institutions.
Usually, Higher Institutions in the
country submits to JAMB their
comprehensive admission list for
verification. JAMB will then verify and
upload the list of approved/successful
candidates to the JAMB website before
returning the approved list to schools
who will in turn upload to their
respective websites or paste same within
the school campuses.
In other words, candidates can check
their admission status on JAMB website
even before it’s uploaded on their choice
institution’s website.

Create More PPT Exam Centres, Stakeholders appeal to JAMB
Stakeholders have appealed to the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board to revisit its examination plans for the forthcoming Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination.
They made the appeal on Monday, saying there was the need for the board to open more examination centres for candidates seeking to write its paper test.
While this year’s Paper Pencil Test and Dual-Based Test will hold on April 5, the agency has yet to fix a date for the Computer-Based Test.
A lawyer and an educationist, Mr. Yomi Giwa, who frowned on the dearth of PPT centres in the ongoing registration exercise, said JAMB, by the action, had disenfranchised many candidates seeking to write the paper-based test.
The development, he said, was worrisome, adding that the plan of the examination body was to compel the candidates to write the CBT.
Giwa, who stressed the need for freedom of choice, said the imposition of the CBT on the candidates was “strange.”
Besides, he stated that there was no guarantee that it would be hitch-free.
He said, “Has JAMB made provisions for such lapses as power failure and the sudden collapse of the server? Even if it has, that is no justification for forcing candidates to take the CBT.
“Look at what happened the other day at the University of Lagos. Its server went down as potential postgraduate students were writing their qualifying examinations. What is the assurance that the candidates will experience a hitch-free examination?”
Another parent, who craved anonymity because he is a civil servant, faulted the alleged imposition of the CBT on candidates.
He said, “The exam body is unfair to the candidates. The choice is for the candidates to make. If one prefers the PPT, one should be allowed to use the process, but if another wants the CBT, so be it.
“Again, the computers can develop a fault on the examination day. Is it not the candidates that will be at the receiving end?
“As far as I am concerned, we are not mature enough for that. In e-banking in the country, there are many occasions where customers were debited without getting any money. So, what is the assurance that the computers will not crash on the examination day and so frustrate the candidates?”
Also, a teacher in a Lagos private school, Mr. Babatunde Nurudeen, while criticising the CBT initiative, said many students were not conversant with computers.
The teacher, who urged JAMB to engage in more enlightenment campaign, said the new platform would frustrate many candidates, especially those from local schools.
According to him, in such institutions, there are no computers, Internet and other modern communication facilities.
But an ICT developer, Chuddy Nwandu, said the CBT would help to curb examination malpractice in the UTME.
He said, “The recurrent examination fraud in the UTME would end with the CBT. Examination leakage is associated with the paper-based tests and I strongly believe that the CBT will put a stop to that. In the computer-based test, one can hardly know what is set prior to the examination. Again, the release of the results via the process is almost immediate. So, with all of these facts, the likelihood of ‘expo’ is very remote.”
Meanwhile, JAMB has warned that it would not create additional PPT centres.
The board, in a mail to cybercafé operators, said, “Please advise the candidates yet to register to select the Computer -Based Testing centres for their exams, instead of waiting for the opening of more centres in the already-filled-up examination towns/areas.
“Please, note that no additional centres will be opened in towns already filled up. The CBT has been so simplified that persons with no prior computer knowledge can take the test on their own.”
Also, the board’s Head of Public Relations, Mr. Fabian Benjamin, told our correspondent on Monday, that it did not shut out anybody from writing either the PPT or the CBT.
He said, “The board has devised the CBT in line with modern technological trend. It is an answer to examination malpractice. With the CBT, there will be no smuggling of materials by the candidates into the examination halls.
“The board has so simplified the platform that an average user of the GSM can easily do the CBT. The wind of the CBT is blowing everywhere and the country cannot be an exception. Even for students kicking against the initiative, have they forgotten that many of the Nigerian universities are now using it for the post-UTME? So, even if they avoid it at this level, there is the likelihood that they will do the test before securing admission to the university.”
Benjamin, who urged Nigerians to support the board to move to loftier heights, said other international examination bodies across the world were using the CBT.

Internet Fraud: Undergraduate bags 18 months imprisonment
An Ikeja High Court on Tuesday sentenced an undergraduate, Damola Ekundayo, to 18 months imprisonment for being in possession of documents used for facilitating Internet fraud.
Justice Oluwatoyin Ipaye handed the sentence to Ekundayo, 27, after he pleaded guilty to a three-count charge bordering on the offence during his re-arraignment.
The judge convicted Ekundayo, who claimed to be a student of Lead City University in Oyo State, and consequently sentenced him to 18 months imprisonment on each of the counts.
According to her, the sentence is to run concurrently beginning from Nov.11, 2013, when Ekundayo was first arraigned for the offence.
The convict was charged to court by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.
He had pleaded not guilty to the charge during the previous arraignment.
Ekundayo, however, later entered a plea bargain agreement with the EFCC and opted to plead guilty to the charge.
The EFCC counsel, Mrs Zainab Etuh, had said Ekundayo was arrested on May 6, 2013 in Lagos, for possession of fraudulent documents.
Etuh said the accused was in possession of an electronic mail address, under the alias of Trisha Douglas, which he wanted to use to perpetrate fraud on the Internet.
She said his offence contravened Section 318 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria 2011.
