ASSU strike should be an eye-opener to the youth in the forthcoming elections.
You donât elect leaders with no passion for education and expect to see improvement in the educational sector. We all understand the grievances of the ASUU. Unfortunately, they deal with a government that cares less about our security, let alone education.
No matter how long the strike takes, those responsible would not care because it neither affects them nor their biological children. Most of their children study abroad comfortably. You need to carefully observe that they donât care about anything that is not a threat to their offices or elections. This is the result you got for electing incompetent leaders.
Our educational sector is already in a terrible state, and with these types of leaders, it will be worse. This negligence by the government is pushing out the talented lecturers we have. The number of competent lecturers leaving our academia for other opportunities locally or internationally is alarming. Most lecturers, of course, have the skills and expertise to be employed in lucrative jobs elsewhere. It is their passion that holds them in the system, and with these terrible experiences, they will gradually lose interest.
It is you, the students, that are the victims. Only God knows the number of years you spent before getting admission due to the limited number of spaces in our universities. Then, you spend 5-6 years on a four-year course due to strikes. When you graduate, you spend another two years before and during the NYSC. It means you will only have the first degree when students who finish secondary school the same year as you will be PhD holders in other countries. Surprisingly, the same system that wastes your time would tell you that you are overage for certain jobs. Those positions will be given to their children who study abroad and finish on time.
The next election is fast approaching. Donât be deceived by empty promises. For your better future, go for candidates with a previous history of competence, kindness, patriotism etc. without sentiment to religion, region or whatever.
